I have noticed when making a new topic that it shows 1 view prior to posting. Is that because the OP is viewing or do the moderators have the ability to read while someone is composing a post?

How can anyone view a topic prior to it being posted? The 'views' counter is incremented to one after you post it. You become the #1 viewer.

Yes we have powers! I'm watching you Ed. :evil5: :undecided: :hello:

I know you guys think this is funny, but I can watch anyone on our network in real time. It is just sometimes I get answers from Sluckey so fast.
I promise you there are people watching us all the time. Next time you agree to terms from Google, Facebook, Yahoo read them. Or read up on the NSA.
Hot topic, watch out.

Anyone watching me will be bored to tears.
Now back in the early 70's........ :l2:

The early 70s are nothing compared to the late 60s! Haha yes there are eyes everywhere these days. Gosh forbid they actually do some profiling to look for legit threats - we may offend someone's "feelings"....

We are ALL watching you Ed. We know you're up to no darned good. :icon_biggrin:

> shows 1 view prior to posting.
Please clarify. I don't think a Topic exists until you hit POST.
When you POST, the forum creates a Topic entry and a Post #1 entry in the backend database. Only then can the Topic and Post be displayed to anybody- up to that second it did not exist.
I do think the first "View" is usually the OP being shown the message s/he just Posted.
> do the moderators have the ability to read while someone is composing a post?
I normally compose in WordPad. NOBODY can see my words until I paste into the Forum box. If you are paranoid, do it that way. (Also handy when the forum or internet crashes while you are posting.)
If you type in the Forum compose box, it is technically possible that the page in your broswer transmits each character to headquarters. Google Search does this, pre-predicting likely answers for what you are trying to type. However this forum's software is older than that type of interactive data transfer. While it could be added, I see no sign of it, and don't think Doug would want letter-by-letter message upload (his server works hard enough just taking finished messages).
> do the moderators have the ability to read while someone is composing a post?
I swear, hand on slide-rule, that _I_ can not see members' posts any sooner than anybody else. If there is a place to do that, I have not seen it.
I have worked with forums and forum back-ends for over 20 years. Several different generations of software (back to dumb teletype). I have never seen any which allowed administrators to peek at what people were typing before they hit POST.
Exception: some forums moderate posts, typically new members. The member types, hits POST, but it goes to a hidden queue and awaits a moderator's approval. So a mod sees it first, before regular members. Most forums do not have the staff to efficiently manage such a system, just let anybody post any thing. Only a few have to be mopped-up later.
> I can watch anyone on our network in real time.
You still would not see anything until the poster hit POST. Try it: compose on one machine while watching the wire on the wireshark machine. None of the typing goes out until you hit POST. (If that is not true, I will be shocked.)
> It is just sometimes I get answers from Sluckey so fast.
He probably keeps the same hours that you do.... ah, you are active 5AM to 1PM, and Sluckey is usually on the forum over those hours. (See, we "do" know some about you, but so do you. Click your name and look at Profile Stats.) (Times I see may be 1 hour off in your time-zone?)
Moderators can see your IP number, regular members can't. This is (rarely) useful when a trouble-maker sets up multiple accounts to evade a Ban-- while there could be different people on one IP (all in the same household or StarBucks), it adds evidence. However Only Doug makes decisions on member-bans or IP blocking.

Also if you look under "Attachments and other options" there is a little checkbox that says "Return to this topic". Once you return to the topic (your first post in your new thread or any other) YOU are immediately number one on the counter or you add to the existing total.

You are correct, it doesn't show a view until you post. I don't consider myself paranoid, but I am not happy with the loss of privacy. That is why I simply use my name here. I lurked long enough to see that the majority of folks here were very helpful and patient with others. That usually makes for a good environment.
However, here I have the ability to view active monitors so I can see what someone is doing. I had a fellow doing things at his workstation that would have been very offensive to others and I needed proof. I have never watched anyone else as it is not the right thing to do.
I was mainly joking, but have often wondered how Moderators move topics and edit posts. Since I have never been involved in doing anything like that and no this is not a desire to do so. You guys that do it don't make enough considering your pay grade.
Just because someone is paranoid doesn't mean there is no reason to be. What is the comment that is used to justify loss of privacy? You shouldn't have to worry about loss of privacy if you have nothing to hide. That was translated from German and is now being said to US citizens. Did I really post this? :l2:
I can still read my slide rule, but I order special reading glasses because the drug store doesn't have a large enough magnification.

Alfred, my mentor, said it best. "What? Me worry?"

You should post a photo of your pedal board with this statement. :l2:

Ah. You work in a "corporate" network. The company has installed software on each workstation which allows "sharing" to other workstations. (In an extreme case the worker's "desktop" is really in a server, his box just displaying what the server sends.)
Yes, then you can see every keystroke and mouse-twitch on some other machine. Useful for Training, and also for checking-up.
Such desktop sharing is not common outside company networks and some remote-support technicians.

:icon_biggrin: I'm myopic(near sighted) so ya, I can read the fine print, but 2' or more, everything looks the same, a big blurrrrrrrr.
2 days ago, I had he same thought Ed, I was typing a reply, went to click an icon and some hyper-text window popped up below, lasted 30 sec, then disappeared. I finished the post, ran my security software, sniffed around in my computer, found nothing. Paranoid, nope, my "file" is to heavy to carry and takes up to many gigs :icon_biggrin:
