Title: One man's floor is another man's ceiling
Post by: tubenit on December 19, 2015, 04:39:37 pm
OR ............... One man's firewood is another man's figured maple!!  :icon_biggrin:

I was born in Ft.Eustis, Virgina in '50.  Lived there a few weeks and moved.  Dad was in the Navy and stationed a Norfolk.  In 2000 (50 yrs later), I went to Colonial Williamsburg which is within an hr of where I was born.

I went to the gunsmithy shop and there was a fairly large pile of firewood. Every piece I saw was flamed maple and they were tiny logs that you couldn't do much with.  I asked the gunsmithy if he would allow me to have a piece & I explained I was born not far from there.  I stated that IF he gave me a piece, that I would do something to "honor" the wood.

I made two jewelry boxes, one for myself and one for my wife.  The top has quartermatched  (bookmatched twice) tops of the flame maple wood.  One jewelry box is black walnut with mahogany ......   and the other is mostly cherry with mahogany (my wife's).

So, last weekend .......... we returned to Colonial Williamsburg & I went to the new gunsmithy and told him the story and showed him the picture of the two jewelry boxes.  He seemed quite pleased with what I had done with them and was all smiles.  The gunsmithy's wife told me that occasionally the cobbler there had flamed maple in his firewood also.  (there was none at the gunsmithy, I looked)

So, I go to the cobbler's store and sure enough there are quite a few pieces of firewood that had flamed maple.  I told my story and was gifted with another free piece of flamed maple firewood.  Gonna just hang on to it for now.  Eventually, it will be a jewelry box or a recipe box for perhaps one of the grandkids (got 14 of them).

With respect,  Jeff
