Title: Celestion Cream Speaker
Post by: TubeGeek on January 03, 2016, 03:11:45 pm
Has anyone tried one of these?

I just sold an 18W amp with one installed and it sounded pretty good to me.  I usually use and prefer to install G12H30's in an 18W but this time I was going for a theme of cream.  LOL

At first I thought it sounded a lot like a blue or gold but with a little more oomph to it.  Kinda bright right outta the box.  I had to tweak a few coupling caps in the 18W to voice the amp to the speaker.  But as I broke in the speaker, it began smoothing out and sounding better.  Overall I like it quite a bit.  It sounds like a more powerful blue or gold to me.  It sure looks great.

I've not tried one but have heard them and they sound fabulous. From what I've heard they also sound great in smaller amps too which is no easy feat for a high powered speaker. This is on my radar to get in the near future. I like to try to buy speakers used to not only save on cost but also because they are more likely to be or closer to being broken in by the previous owner. However for the cream I will make an exception  :icon_biggrin:  but my Celestion bros Rick & John just might be able to hook me up again?

I have been eyeing these too.  I do have a fellow player who just ordered one for his Mesa, single 12 combo.

I am wondering what Celestion is looking to.  They have the Gold, but I guess since Eminence is making a high wattage AlNico they should as well.

I put a gold in a Mesa Mark IV a while back and didn't like it at all but I think the cream is different ?

I have a Cream Alnico that I have tried with a number of different amps.  It seems to work quite well with everything I plugged it into.  It is not quite as bright as the Gold Alnico.  I have them paired in a 2 x 12 cabinet which is quite nice.

Revisiting this Brian I'm thinking it is a similar characteristic that Weber speakers have where the higher wattage the speaker the darker/less bright the speaker is? Does the cream get the same sort of nasally greenback sound? I would think the cream to be a bit more punchy than a greenback as well?

I think you are accurate with your description above.  The speaker does have a bit of a nasal tone, but in a good way, it does seem a little darker.  The mids are less rounded that the Gold.  It is very punchy as suggested.  I like the speaker because I don't get the real bright bright highs.

It's a really nice speaker, but about $100 too much.
