Title: Reservoir capacitance question.
Post by: mresistor on February 03, 2016, 09:07:23 am
Concerning using a 5Y3GT - is it OK to use 40uf as the first cap in the PS filter? It appears all the old tube manuals state that 20uf is the limit for the 5Y3. What do you think. Will using 40uf cause flashover in the rectifier on startup? If you feel it is not OK, then would it be acceptable to use a 40uf cap on down the line for the preamp PS filtering?   Thanks.

I have several amps with 5Y3s that I used a 32µF for the first cap. Never had any problems. I've never tried a 40µF though. The 40 can definitely be used farther down the B+ rail.
