I am very sad.  My absolute favorite writer and performer.  Always kept a great band and paid them well.  I finally did get to meet him a couple years ago.  I had told my wife recently that I thought he was on this continual tour because I thought he preferred to pass away on the Silver Wings.

Just thinking back when I played clubs in the 70's, you had to play a lot of Merl's songs to get by to have a job:>) I met his Son Marty once when he was at a Church close by. Believe it or not Marty is in Christian music ministry. RIP Merle.

I had a Dodge Charger with the radio tuner stuck during the Big City and Back to the Barrooms era.  It was stuck on a local country station, which I guess was kinda funny because I was a long-haired heavy metal player at the time.  I never paid very much attention to that music until Merle came on.  Now there was something worth listening to no matter what the genre.

I got my band playing a coupla Merle tunes and even though they were more rock than country, people were baffled at gigs.  The kids was just crass.  We still play Sit Here and Drink when we get together to jam.

My girlfriend was astounded when she first started coming around because I would follow up a Megadeath CD with a Merle CD.  And I knew all the lyrics to Merle's and only a few to Dave's.  My younger kids are into Reggae, but I got them to listen to Merle once I explained what he was doing and how well he was doing it.

I know we're not supposed to say anything political on this forum, but Merle's incredible voice, consummate musicianship, and outstanding song-writing ability coupled with his stance on rights and freedom make him one of only a handful of truly great Americans.

Man I hope we don't have to endure a Lady Gaga tribute version of Mama Tried.
