See what you guys think about this. I harrangued my daughter into doing the vocals for me. She sings her brand of stuff really well and I'm happy with what she did on this one, but I pushed her out of her realm. I sing like a chainsaw in a mudhole, so that was out. The biggest disclaimer is that I stink at recording - especially heavy guitars - but I'm still working at it.
Anyway, there are no added effects except for a highpass on the lead and reverb on the overall mix. The cab was mic'd with a cheapo Radio Shack mic straight into my crappy computer. The drums, bass, and keys came from a backing track. I can't play drums anyway and our keyboard is on the fritz, so this worked out nice.
Okay, blah, blah, blah... here it is.
El34 Edit - This is one of my favorite forum tunes and so I grabbed it and uploaded it to my server.
You can play it here or download it below

I thought it sounded awesome, listened to it several times. Did you do the keys also?
-
That is VERY impressive! I like the tune alot and the amp sounded good to me.
I am surprised it recorded so well (after reading your comments) & can't figure out your disclaimers and apologies? Not needed. It all came together just great.
:-? ;)
Your daughter covered the vocals really well. You put together a good tune.
With respect, Tubenit

Sounded cool to me, very nice production really! Sounds like what I pictured an amp called that and looking like that would sound, mean and in your face, I mean it had to right? :D
Regards,
Dyna

Wow!
Rockin! :)
I bet your fingers are tired after that lead.
Did you used Acid to record it?
I used to use that, really a nifty program.
Also, about the drum track, did you get the midi or program it yourself?
Great arrangement, great everything.
-
Thank you very much for the kind comments.
>Did you do the keys also?
>Also, about the drum track, did you get the midi or program it yourself?
The drums, bass, and keys came off a backing track. I fiddled with the dynamics and chopped it up a little here and there, but that's all. Here's where you can find this track and a bunch of others:

One problem with these is that they're mostly not ACIDized for time and tempo information, so you'll have to play with them a bit to fit them into a metronome. Some are actually all recorded live by whomever and the tempo fluctuates like you expect a live song would. In that case, you might have to just wing it without the benefit of your program's measure, beat, and tempo features. No biggie really, as long as you're not trying to record one riff and copy it throughout the song. That's a common Pro-Tools approach, but I don't like doing it that way anyway. I'll do multiple takes, but all the rhythm parts you hear were recorded during the same take, not pieced together. Same with the lead - probably twelve takes, but what you hear is just one of them, not cut and splice.
I did Mississippi Queen a few years back with the intention of making it sound like a live outdoor concert, so I dubbed in these cool crowd sounds and applauses and yelling and stuff. I also played every part and recorded only one take of each instrument. That's how it would be if it were played live - one chance, mistakes and all. Then I really screwed with it to make it sound like a bootleg done with a handheld recorder. You can hear it rub against the bootlegger's clothes at one point. It was pretty cool, except for a bass pan I added, which wouldn't have made it to a real bootleg, but only the average joe doesn't know that. Anyway, you can hear the crowd (no one) going wild for us (just me) in the huge stadium (my house). But I digress...
>Did you used Acid to record it?
No, I used Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro. I've had that program for several years and I've always liked it, but this time was a bear. I saw that GEO uses acidplanet and I liked the look of it, so I signed up for it. I'll eventually migrate everything to my website - if and when I ever get that thing working.
-
THAT WAS GREAT! 8-) 8-) 8-)
I have to ask...how old is your daughter? I have an 11yr old and a 14yr old. If I asked them to sing an Ozzy tune for me, all I would get would be an air leak and roll eyes! (This even after secretly inserting Crazy Babies into my wife's labor music for their delivery!) How did you do it?
Great tune, great chops, great sounding amp! Keep it coming!

HA! She's 15 now and been singing all her life. She and her brother and sister were raised on stuff like that, of course, but it's not her thing really. Fly Leaf's more her speed. My son (the middle one) goes around humming the Immigrant Song, so there's hope for him, too.
I've mentioned to her about taking a shot at some Alter Bridge stuff, but I don't know if she will or not. The other problem is trying to record the guitar. This one was heavy, but the amp's capable of way heavier - at least Uber heavy. I can't seem to record that right, though. I'm working on it...
-
Hey that sounds good.
Good to see more people posting stuff here.
-
That's good dude. Your daughter's clear, irreverant voice gives it a punk/alternative feel. Interesting composition. Huge guitars.

Ahh, you can do it! Try diferent mic placings on the cone, that makes a dif. Crank up the bass and let her rip! I want to hear you riff One Day Remains - THEN I'll be impressed! :o AND that's an easy one for her to sing!
I want to lay out a challenge. How about everyone TRY to pull something together to post by Christmas? That's a month away and plenty of time. We can all yap about them over Christmas break! There are a lot of talented players here - let's hear your stuff!

I don't get much feedback so why bother? ;D
-
Sounds great jhad 8-) You nailed the Zakk squeals.
Your daughter has a great voice. Congrats on getting a 15 year old to jam with daddy.
-
Dude, that was kick ass. You nailed Zakk awesomely, and her vocals made it kinda haunting. Really a good recording.
-
Thanks bro! I'm having recording rig troubles and I can't seem to get it to straighten out. I've had the bug again for a while now to lay some tracks, but Murphy's at the recording desk and I can't seem to kick him on down the line yet, so I'm holding off until I can get it fixed.
-
Funny that's the first time I listened to that ,can't believe I missed it.
If that were on an album I purchased,I would not be disappointed, and the heavy stuff has to be good to catch my ear :D
-
Hey, what happened to this tune?
I wanted to listen to it again.
The link is dead.
-
Uh-oh, sorry about that. I took my website down to re-do it and haven't gotten it back up yet. Give me a day or two and I'll fix that file/link at least. Again, sorry about that...
...although I'm really happy you actually want to hear it again!!
I'll fix...
-
yeah, I liked that tune.
-
Okay, I got the website sort of back up and I corrected the link in the first post. I'll see about adding your player into this thread somewhere, but I'll have to do that a little later.
The media player on the website is giving me fits in Firefox, so I added a link to the IE Tab addon. Just open the page either in IE from the git-go, or use "Open in IE TAB" by right-clicking in Firefox after you get the addon. I'll fix that later, too.
-
Cool,
I am streaming it in Winamp.
I like your daughters voice a bunch on this.
Nice fat guitar sound too.
-
(player down until I can upload the file in mp3)
I'm testing the player.
Can anybody hear this? I can see it downloading the song, but I don't hear it. Maybe it's because the song's in wma and the player only works with mp3?
-
yeah, the flash player only plays .mp3 files.
-
Ok, where did this one go.......
Jim
-
I like this tune.
I guess I will have to host it on my server to keep it from going away.
-
Well rats, looks like I've stayed away from this party too long. Sounds like something I would have enjoyed.

Oh crap... sorry about that. I've had too much going on and couldn't keep up with the website, so I dumped the whole thing last summer. I wasn't thinking about this thread when I did that. I think I have an idea regarding a decent place to hang the mp3. I'll post a link back here if it works.
EDIT: Here, try this:
(...yet another bad link in the chain...)
It won't stream, but should be available for download. Let me know if anyone has problems with it.
Incidentally, I'm muddling my way through some stuff using Ardour (http://ardour.org/) at the moment. My old computer took a crap and I'm working on/with a new machine now. I hope to have some new stuff together soon and I also hope my daughter, Tess, will work on some vocal stuff with me again. She's pretty busy, so we'll see. I want to hear what she does with some old blues songs - female versions of Dust My Broom, Walkin' Blues, etc... songs that really depart from her comfort zone. I'll come up with a streaming solution by then and we'll see how she does.
-
EDIT: Here, try this:

:crybaby2: The link is giving a 404 error, "page" not found. Wonder if Google red-flagged it thinking infringements and yanked it.

That's terrific, Doug! The fact that you like it at all means a lot to me.
Also, Google may have just been having a glitch. That links seems to be working now.
-
I grabbed the tune while googles link was working
In fact, I am going to play it again right now.
-
:bump1:
Playing this tune again
Love it still!
-
Wow, what a great tune! Again.... :worthy1:
