Title: Amp I saw briefly can't remember maker
Post by: super&plexi on July 20, 2016, 08:14:11 pm
This is something that has been driving me nuts occasionally I guess but was in a local GC possibly 15 years ago and I was with a buddy so I wasn't driving and capable of hanging out but while he did whatever he was doing I was perusing the used gear and a little amp caught my eye it was sort of in the mold of older HiFi gear with a folded cage on top to protect the tubes it was about the size a little larger I guess then small Knight amplifier, finished in solid black. The only Name that sort of sticks in my mind is possibly THD, but I'm not really sure that it was made by them.
The main thing that sticks out in  my head is that the amplifier was seemingly capable of infinite sustain at almost imperceptible levels of volume. I wasn't able to crank it of course but I noticed that by manipulation of the controls I had almost no volume coming out but I could hear my cord ringing forever. I'm sure it was produced by a company and not someone's DIY, and possibly a single ended that switched between power tubes but that might just be imagination on my part,  something sticks out in my head saying there might have been different types of power tubes but not two of any kind, except preamp tubes.
If anybody knows of such a thing maybe they can chime in. Man I guess I'm starting to come to grips with my problem when The One That Got Away it's not a girl or a job...

Was it this one?  Any preamp tube and any power tube you want.  I also remember playing this in my buddy's music store.  Sounded pretty good considering I'm not a big fan of SE amps.

Hey thanks guys...S for keeping me in check and R 200 for I think leading me in the right direction, I think by the size it was probably their single ended model and I do remember it was solid black but maybe the push pull comes with a solid black face also. It must have been the hot plate that allowed it to go down to almost zero volume.   I'll have to check it out as I thought let the hot plates were sort of centered around a specific output impedance...THD... seeing as how that was my first thought I had checked in but I didn't find that bivalve thing. As I said I didn't get to play very long, and I also don't remember any great tone coming out of it, but I do remember twisting it up and going to almost zero volume, but  a bunch of sustain, and a huge level of difference in the twisting that knob. It reminded me of a recording session I did where they had a new preamp they were proud of the cost about 7 Grand and basically looked like one big knob on the front, but by twisting it he could make my Princeton sound like a little transistor radio in an old truck or a big fat 4 X 12. Tube stuff of course in probably 16" wide by 12" high package.
Great looks like something else to obsess about...Slukey, you might have to start a 12-step plan :help:

Haha. I think I'm stuck in a loop! I have vague memories like that that would haunt me but for the fact that I'll soon forget those too!
