Title: LCR's in Hoffman 18 w Marshall
Post by: Oddvar on August 04, 2016, 06:04:25 am
Hi.

In the build layout for Hoffman stout there are three 500 v 20uf electrolytics and one 40 uf 500 volt .
I was wondering if I could substitute thes four with two 50x50 uf 500volts?

Best.

I would not use 50µF for the first cap seen by a 5Y3. But if you use silicon diodes it will be fine.

Oddvar,

It sounds like you are wanting to have only two filter cap stages of 50uf/500v instead of the four filter cap stages of the 18w?

You will be much happier I think with four filter cap stages and have a much quieter amp.  I would stick with the original plan that Hoffman has posted.

Replace the 5Y3 with diodes.
