Title: LED in Hoffman AB763 bias vary tremolo?
Post by: bnwitt on September 05, 2016, 05:19:45 pm
Has anyone replaced the R/C components on the Hoffman AB763 V5-A Tremolo Oscillator with an LED?  If so does it work/do anything to the strength of the oscillator?

I did it with a Gibson trem, took it from mild mannered to ballsy and brash, the musician types liked it

Sluckey has and reported it strengthens the oscillator output. You essentially have perfect bypassing down to d.c.

Thanks for the replies Shooter and HBP.  Looks Like I'll be giving it a try.  The player I'm building a BFDR for wants that strong Ry Cooder Tremolo tone.

I wonder if Cooder used a small amp which injects trem at a preamp cathode, like a VibroChamp.  They certainly get swampy trem...

The tweed Tremolux gets a swampy trem as well.  I don't know your appetite for building experimental amps, but it seems you could graft a blackface preamp to the tweed Tremolux paraphase inverter & output section.  Or the player could use an EQ pedal to scoop mids if a tweed Deluxe/Tremolux isn't the right sound.

I did a little research on Ry Cooder's equipment and he has lots of amps and guitars.  The vibroverb and tweed deluxe were amps he had on stage at a few performances:

He supposedly uses an outboard compressor somewhere in his signal chain and he has a little tube preamp built into a variac body for feeding the BFVV and Tweed Deluxe as well:

I'm putting a middle control on this BFDR's tremolo channel as I always do with black faced Fender amps as I just think not having one stinks.
