Title: mallory old vs new
Post by: 12AX7 on October 12, 2016, 09:59:35 am
A few years ago when mallory changed from those yellow to white for the 150 series there was discussion (at some forums, can't recall if here) as to whether there was any tonal difference, mainly i guess due to the different size for the same value. I would think size would since the distance between conductors is smaller in one and would likely have to be made to same specs by the thickness of the conductor.  But whether that difference is there is any is noticeable i have no idea. It did seem back then when i got my first batch of white ones there was a slight difference but it;s been a while so memory may fail me.

I haven't been watching or even doing much in the way of building or modding amps in the last few years so i'm just wondering, did that debate just die of did a general consensus eventually shine thru one way or another? I just found a old board with the yellow ones on it and was thinking of trying them in my amp which has the newer white ones but i figured i'd see what you all think first. I know some of you are you're probably shaking your heads, but humor me please.

Thanks, i read some of that. One thing i saw was his description of yellow having a less articulate or muddier bass. I just tried them in coupling and mid cap (tone stack) positions and i tend to agree with that and fund the yellow smoother overall which i think is part and parcel of that muddy thing he mentioned. I was able to turn the mid knob up considerably further than before with it getting tinny and harsh like it normally does with the white 150's. But thats not to say they're better. In fact i put the white back in because they just sound clearer to me. Whether or not what i noticed was my ears playing tricks or what i won't speculate, but it WAS at low volume and i would think those differences might be multiplied at stage voluem which could end up making the yellow ones more desirable when cranked , since we know how amps tend to get harder sounding as they get louder. I seldom play out anymore so to me a cap that sounds better at lower volumes makes more sense. But in the end the difference isn't truly enough to matter i don't think. I do recall using sozos for one amp and liked them at first but later decided mallories were clearer. But i also recall feeling the mid cap worked better with a sozo. Think i'll try that next, but i definately don't like sozo in gain stages. Too soft and dark.

I had the vintage and standard yellow ones but i think, not sure but THINK the .022 i had were all standard. Could be wrong tho. This  was a few years back.

No, all yellows.
