Hi,
I am having a open back combo cabinet made for the Hoffman Deluxe Reverb I finished for myself a while back. I built it as a head originally and have been playing it through a new Marshall quad cabinet. It sounds good through the quad which has Greenbacks in it. The cab is 8 ohms.
Now that I want to install a single 12 in the new combo cabinet I am not sure just what to buy. Budget for the speaker is around $150 or less.
Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Billy

WGS ET65 is a FANTASTIC Fender-ish circuit speaker in an open-back cab. Or an ET90 if you want a bit more headroom.
You can buy two for your budget limit and take out three of your greenbacks in the 4x12 and put the second one in there. Then use it as a detuned cabinet for fantastic results.

Thanks for the info.
On another note we put a vintage original JBL D120F in a 18 watt Marshall today. I was really surprised at the change in sound. I will play the amp at a gig in the Florida Keys Saturday night. I am looking forward to seeing what it sounds like live on stage.
The cabinet maker is taking more time than I expected. Same old story here in South Florida....no one ever gets things done when they say they will.
Anyway, thanks for the feed back.
Cheers,
Billy

I also really like the ET65 with my D'MARS ODS in a closed-back cabinet.

Hands down, Weber 12F150.

You can't go wrong with a JBLD120, as long as weight isn't a worry
Eminence legends are good for standard Fendery sort of sound

I also suggest the Weber 12F150. I have a 50 watt 8 ohm version and love it. That being said the Eminence Legends in 12" are probably outstanding speakers too. US Speaker has them reasonably priced and with free shipping. I have a Legend 10" in my 79 Princeton and it sounds excellent all around. Look at the Legend 1275, 125 or the GB12 for that amp. If you are wanting cleaner sound get a Legend that handles more power like the 121 handles 150 watts - at $80 with free shipping can you really beat the deal?
Warehouse Guitar Speakers have some pretty good reviews too.

I prefer a Greenback in a Deluxe. Sounds very fendery. I find the amp has more versatility. Mostly I prefer alnico magnets, like Webers in a super reverb, but you have 4 speakers and can mix 2 ceramics. In a deluxe it is a one shot deal. The greenback sounds great clean and will grind if wanted.
I like JBL's too and Altec, but unless I know I am going to stay on the clean side of things I use Celestions, even playing country. The JBL 120 and Altec 417 both hold together well and are great, but to get amp breakup it costs a lot more volume. Might need pedals, which I like as well. With a deluxe I feel the tone is right about 6 on volume and a greenback will breakup if my attack is strong and with a light touch it is very clean.
I guess it has to do with what you are playing, the style and venue size. I try to get the best tone at the lower volume. If the place wants it louder (never happens) I can simply place a microphone.

1 more for WGS speakers. :icon_biggrin:

Warehouse are great. I prefer the veteran to the Celestion 30. I have a few. I like these with big tubes. Speaker selection can be pricy. I try to take a new build to a store and test a few.

Don't forget to match the speaker load to the OT.
you mentioned you were playing through an 8 ohm cabinet, and you sounded good.
I believe you know you will lose volume.
