Hello all,
I'm itching to build another amp (solder withdrawal) and I'm open to suggestions. I have a chassis that will accommodate Deluxe Reverb type iron so I was leaning toward a 6V6 build. I already have the blackface thing covered pretty well by my last two builds. I haven't done a 5E3 yet, but I think I want more clean to medium gain/grit rather than tweed wildness.
I'm intrigued by tubenit's designs but with his prodigious output, it's hard to settle on one (current favorite?). The Carolina Overdrive Special 5879 plus with 6V6s might work. Or a D'Lite. I'd like to try something Dumbly, but it has to do that Blues thing.

Lots of choices from mean to clean and in between, especially if you are open to designing your own board from a schematic. The old Ampeg blue diamond amps are worth a look. They have a nice warm sound and can be overdriven if desired. Not too many people cloning those.

Is there a depository of tubenit's amps? A website perhaps?

Yes. Right here. Look in the "Schematics and Diagrams" forum. Some of his stuff may be in the Archives forum also.

Now you got me thinkin', son. I have no trouble doing a board from a schematic. The Ampeg Reverberocket R-12-R with the octal preamp might be just the ticket. Thanks for the trigger. Still wouldn't mind hearing from tubenit, though.

Given your parameters of good for blues and "dumblish" ................. using 6V6's.
This would be my first choice: Tweed Bluezmeister (TBM & FX)
I used a delay pedal with slight delay. (And ..... I added delay in the mix and waaayyy overdid it). No other pedals were used.

On this tune, I used a Zenith Drive about 2/3rds into the song. I may have used a delay pedal with slight delay also, but don't remember. I added some delay and compression in the mix.

IF you have any interest in this, I do have a layout to go with it.
I've used a Emminence Red, White and Blues ............. a Cannabis Rex .............. & lastly an Emminence Texas Heat which sounded the best of all to me. I will say with using a cathode biased approach with the PT being 300-0-300, ........... I can use 5Y3GT, 5V4 or GZ34 rectifiers with either 6V6's or 5881's.

Thank you, tubenit. I'm leaning toward the Ampeg, mainly because of the chassis I have. I will build a TBM, but I want to use a chassis I can put bigger iron in so I can run 6V6s or 6L6s/5881s. This chassis is steel and I hate enlarging trannie cutouts in steel.
I'm looking at the Ampeg R-12-R-B. It has an all octal preamp with cathode biased 7591s. (I know I said 6V6s, but these have a bit more power and can use the same size transformers.) VVR might be interesting. No reverb transformer? Maybe use a 6G5 tone stack for a bit more control. Probably use a ClassicTone 40-18107 PT. Most Deluxe sized PTs don't have enough heater current for this amp (requires 3.4A). The 40-18002 OT looks like a good option even though it has a 6k6 primary (7591s like an 8k primary).

Depends more on Voltage and Current than tube type.
Anyhow, the datasheet shows (http://www.mif.pg.gda.pl/homepages/frank/sheets/168/7/7591.pdf) (for push-pull) five suggestions for 6.6K and one for 9K.
-
Yes, my mistake, 9k for cathode bias. The 6.6k examples are all for fixed bias.
Another error was the total heater current should be 3.1A. It has 3 x 6SL7 + 1 x 6SN7 + 2 x 7591 = 3 x 0.3 + 0.6 + 2 x 0.8 = 3.1
I imagine any DR style PT with 3A of heater current would be close enough or would you want some margin there?

Leon C. is an amazingly talented player, amp builder and is a forum member!
His YouTube on the Supro 1688TN is probably the most impressive tone I've heard from any amp build. It's as close to an ideal tone in my head as I can find.

Hope you have fun with the Ampeg!

I don't see the schematic to the 1688TN anywhere any ideas.

Thanks, man. That is a killer amp. Too big for my current project, but I'll put it on the list ;) I saw LeonC's thread on the Gear Page. Evidently, he's not willing to share a schematic and I haven't found one on the web either. Might have to buy an original and draw up my own.

Consider the October Club over at AX84.com. Very much like a 6V6 version of a JTM45 or Bassman and if you do the optional switching schemes it will do a nice "brown sound" as well. It's variable NFB loop design is something that I like to implement in my builds. Makes for a very flexible amp!

Thanks for the link to the October. Interesting design. My first amp was a P1eXtreme from the AX84 site. Lots of good info/helpful people over there.
