Scotty plays with a thumbpick, but sometimes holds his had as though he's holding a flatpick.

The crazy-fast double-stop lines are him holding his index finger alongside the thumbpick, plucking the lower string with the thumbpick and the upper string with the nail of his index finger... while still alternate-picking with those going at the same time.

Man that right hand technique is amazing, switching picking patterns that fast is mad!
