Howdy Everybody, I'm Heath!
I've always been interested in guitar amps and never really had a chance to start learning about them until I decided to modify an old crate BV120H I had about 4 years ago. Since then it has only become more of an obsessive hobby than I had originally planned.
Since then I have built 3 amps from scratch and hacked together a few more. To help learn I find it easier to buy a piece of broken equipment then muddle through fixing it. This has helped me along the way to learn how switching systems work and get familiarized with how everything flows through the circuit.
I started out as a medical lab tech in the army then wen to school to learn to program computers. I spent several years programming then went into the medical IT world installing software and interfacing laboratory instrumentation to the hospital computer systems.
I find that my programming knowledge has helped very much in understanding electronics. It makes sense though, as computer programming was derived from it and I can see the conceptual continuity throughout both realms.
My latest amp project is a Blues Jr I bought about a year ago as just a broken chassis and did the BillM mods on it. It didn't sound good still so I gutted it a few weeks back and added a Choke from a DRRI, found the schematic for the bias circuit on this forum and modified it to provide enough bias voltage for a pair of 6V6s, then built a TW Liverpool preamp in it. Wow! It's a fun amp! Too bad I am giving it to a good friends son, but he is 11 and loves music. I helped him choose his first electric guitar a few years back and he has only excelled since! There's more to this hobby than just solder and smoke!
Can't wait to learn more about building, tweaking, and diagnosis of tube amps and electronics in general!!!

Come on in. Take your shoes off and sit a spell. You're in good company.
There's a current thread about Blues Jr. I think the guy could benefit from your experience. Join in.
