Title: PR build - New builders take a peek
Post by: p2pAmps on December 19, 2017, 07:04:48 am
Guys/Gals

If you are considering building a Hoffman Style Princeton Reverb this may be of some interest.  I have built many of these amps and they are a very nice addition to your amp arsenal.  These are also a lot of fun to build and really better than anything commercial you can buy hands down.  I build mine with a DR Output transformer, a few value changes here and there to slow up the trem etc...

Anyway, if you're on the fence about one of these I say just order the parts and get started.  There are many Pros here on the forum that will/can help with questions.

Cheers...

Hey Hey Hey Buddy.  Long time, hope you are well.  I guess you did not know just how big those .1 Blue SoZo caps are.  I used some in a Princeton Reverb and then added an effects loop.  I had to remove 3 of the things to have room or I would have had to toast them.

What do you think about the Sozo Blue, not a Blue Molded is it.  When John started making the Blues and Vintage Yellow, he sent me a nice sized box to try of all different values, more than the have now.  The amp seemed a little flat sounding until I finally got a real 12Ax7 for V1 and balanced out of balance PI.  I mean I left it a little unbalanced.

Also, the RCA 7C5 are easy to come by too.  Loctile sockets.  Either use the socket or get adapters off eBay.  It is like buying NOS Tung-sol 6V6GT for pennies on the dollar.  The have increased some lately, but I just got a sleeve of 5, RCA for $15.

Love these, but I am messing with a 5F11 at the moment.

Mr Ed, how are ya man...

Yeah, I've been a little quiet as it's been a very busy year and also had to deal with several health related issues.

Not sure about the Sozo yet.  First time I have used them and wanted to see if they are anything special.  I'm waiting on the cab for this girl.  So once it shows and I get it all together I'll put it through some paces.  Mallory 150s are still my go-to caps to be honest.

I have 2 DR builds on the bench now so it's a busy Dec for sure.

p2pAmps,

Your work is inspiring, I have a couple of Fender type amps ready to go.

I am getting ready to get parts for a PR so this is good timing.

Are you sneaking in a Mid Control on the back?

Yep, mid control in the back.  I like using a 25K pot but it's kinda up to you which value you will like.

Lookin' good as always Mike. I have a PR and reg P both waiting on me for when I decide to get on 'em but that won't be for a while I'm afraid. I thought you had mostly changed to restoring the lap steels'? ;)

Very good Grasshopper. But if you wish to achieve the highest standard you must HiWatt.

All jist aside; Your work is a standard to attain to for those of us that are at most levels. Thanks for the inspiration.

No, I'm still going strong on amps and pedal steels.  Just been a busy year and I haven't been around the forum as much as I wanted...

Good to hear from ya bro

Mike,

That amps looks fantastic.  Is the Tone Tubby your choice or the clients?

Thanks a lot...  Yeah, the customer requested that speaker.  It would not be my personal choice for this amp but then again we all have different ears.  I have used JBL D120s, Celestion Golds, Warehouse, and Webers and they, of course, all do something different.  The customer kinda knew what he at least wanted to try so he went with this speaker.  For nearly 300 bucks it better be good LOL
