Title: Tube Pre SS Power
Post by: hesamadman on January 02, 2018, 08:44:49 am
I have slightly asked this once before. Actually I jumped the gun the last time and bought a 200w class D amplifier before really looking into it and now I dont think it will be what I want.

Im looking to buy a solid state power amp. Just the circuit board and components. Not housed into anything. I want to install it in a chassis with my bass tube preamp and make it a small combo. Right now I would like to just stick with a 100 watt amplifier. The thing that I have come across is a lot of these require a crazy power supply. I was hoping to build my own power supply using a toroidal transformer. Does anyone have any experience with this or have any info at all?

First you must specify the voltage and the current required

On the Parts Express site, click on the PDF manual icon for the D-amp.  Specs say 15 - 30VDC max; but Item 8 recommends 36VDC @ 5.0A.  Looks like any SW-ing PS will work.  Available at Parts Express, Amazon or anywhere.

No doubt a SW-ing Supply is recommended due to size & weight.  E.g., an 18V 6A PT would be huge & heavy.

My goal is to build a power supply on board with my bass preamp. Not sure how difficult this is going to get

http://www.ti.com/tool/TPA3255EVM $75 from the TI store with promo code HIGHPOWERAUDIO

Power supply was about $30 from Arrow Electronics

I'm not sure how many watts this would make configured as mono and with this 48 volt PS, but it should be plenty.

Just visually, the quality of the TI board is leaps and bounds above the cheap Chinese boards. (IOW more likely to stand up to PRR's drive to the gig on a rutted road in an Econoline van torture test).
