Title: What do you guys suggest for Wire Strippers of PTFE wire ?
Post by: mresistor on January 08, 2018, 09:39:51 am
Wire Strippers for PTFE clad wire? Looks like I need to get a better tool now for this wire. I was looking at these two but I would like your suggestions if you think there is something better out there for not much money.  Thermal strippers are kind of expensive as far as I know.

I use Teledyne Heat Strippers, but Kline is recommended Highly by others so I bought some of those too.  They work well if you prefer them over heat strippers.  I use both now, but initially I made a mistake and did not keep them with a light coating of oil before I put them away and they did not last very long.  Now I do and I have been using a set for over a year and still work great.

Thanks Steve - mine are similar but I guess they aren't well made, maybe I'll try those first.

My Klein is a simple stripper. The cutter gauge 'holes' are accurate. The trick is to use consistent pressure when stripping. Play with it until you find the pressure that works best for you. And don't expect 7 strand wire to strip the same as 19 strand wire. Oh, and throw them away when they get rusty or dull, or give them to someone that uses plastic covered wire. I'm an occasional user and my strippers usually stay sharp for several years. I put a drop of oil on them at the end of each session.

I never cared for that style stripper you showed. Mainly because they are too cumbersome inside a chassis.

There are 2 that look very similar in the Kline brand.  One is item number 11046 and are what Sluckey suggested.  They are $10 at Home Depot.  They sell another one which is spring loaded and easy to get into places called "narrow nose" and these are about $30. First one I got was the $30 thinking it must be better.  These lasted no time whereas the $10 I have had a while.

I use the a lot in the last year making Breadboard connector wires.  Still work like when I got them except I am noticing a little ragged edge on 18 AWG.

I picked up the Klein 11046 at home depot here and it was $12.57 with tax. I tried it out and it is indeed much better than the one I have been using.
Thank you guys for the replies and tips. This is my first time using mil-spec stranded Tefzel hookup wire for a build and it definitely requires a better made tool that is sharp.
Using this wire is for sure not as easy as solid pushback wire.
