Title: Stereo Amp head build
Post by: SimpleSi on January 12, 2018, 01:21:32 pm
Hey guys, long time lurker. Finally decided to make an account.

I have a project in mind, inspired by 6L6 hifi stereo systems..

Has anyone here made a stereo input guitar amp.

I know trace Elliott who got bought out by Gibson did a fairly complex stereo out amp, but that's only mono input with stereo effects loop. - far too complex for me

These guys have come up with a stereo head. 1x 6L6 per side. Just a master and tone

No idea how I'd even do it, or how I'd convert a hifi stereo system to being outside usable for a guitar, as hifi stereo systems are stupidly clean

Really stuck here

Welcome.

There's a lot of stuff here about stereo. You should probably discover it for yourself. However there is a super-related thread just below yours (ATM) which you should have seen.

Done a few forum searches before posting - Saw the related thread, however it's not entirely what I'm trying to do.

I provided a link to the example Amp that I'm asking about above. (super clean - don't really want any dirt from the amp)
Thinking Fenderish clean / takes pedals for colouring

Maybe those guys will give you a schematic.

So: two Champs in one box, except 6L6 instead of 6V6.

I'd use the PT from a 2-6L6 Tweed amp, wire two Champs, use SE 6L6 output iron. Or for a lesser power goal, one DeLuxe PT and two 6V6 Champs-- the 6L6 is not *that* much louder than the 6V6. Pretty much like if I built one kitchen cabinet, I could build two for not a lot more work.

Sunn started by using a Dynaco HIFI amplifier.  It was literally a complete dynaco chassis in a big head cabinet with  extra preamp stages, a couple of pots and input jacks all installed  into a very basic separate preamp chassis.   The fact that it was a HIFI amp at it's core didn't make it an amp with tons and tons of clean headroom.   If you took a guitar with hot 10K pickups,  and dimed the volume, the amp had lots of overdrive and crunch like any Fender, Marshall or whatever.

The point of the history lesson is say that a lot of the clean you are looking for has less to do with the power amp section and more to do with the signal it is fed.

a lot of the distortion you get in a guitar amp comes from the pre-amp (not all, but a lot,, maybe most).  I'd focus on making a clean producing preamp. It'll certainly mean voltage dividers between gain stages to prevent successive gain stages from being overdriven.  Read Merlin's preamp gain stage chapter (google 'valve wizard triode gain stage').  Figure out what makes a gain stage overdrive and clip, and plan to make sure your preamp doesn't do those things.

You can have a super clean power amp, but if it is fed distortion, distortion will come out of the speakers.
