Title: Turret Minimum Spacing
Post by: Papa Jim on May 19, 2018, 07:55:33 pm
When building a typical turret board for a tube amp with 500Vdc possible between turrets, what is a safe spacing between adjacent surface edge of turrets.

I typically use 5/16" center to center spacing for Hoffman's turrets.

500V won't jump a sheet of paper.

Space to wrap wires without touching may be the practical limit.

But how many 500V nodes do you really have? Typically just a few. Be generous there.

Ask yourself what you hope to gain by violating a reasonable 5/16 spacing. I found that while resistors could be spaced closer, just a few caps makes even 5/16 tight.

Do not build stuff so tight that it can't be modified or repaired!!  I have been sorry too often.

Thanks guys for the advice.

I did this AC-15 board with 1/4" spacing so the board would be short enough to fit my chassis. 1/4" is tough to work with though. I still recommend 5/16" unless you have a special need.
