Title: Steel String Special - GGA
Post by: jojokeo on November 02, 2018, 04:06:59 pm
Here's another GGA pedal inspired by a Steel String Singer Dumble amp and orig made supposedly by the Vertex character (but this concept is not new to the effects world). I was less than impressed with a number of issues trying out an original circuit and made so many changes that I basically re-designed the entire thing. Especially the Filter (mid range tone control). This one does indeed change the mid character in a much better range while adding more low mids a slightly shaving highs turned to the left and the opposite with upper mids and highs while reducing and tightening lows turned towards the right. Hours spent with numerous trial tests getting it just in the right ranges. It uses four jfets in a stacked in pairs in the high gain style SRPP/coscode aka mu-amp configuration and depending on the jfets used provides quicker onset of distortion and depending on if using single coils or humbuckers. Jfets are renowned to have the most "tube-like" rounded corners' distortion like our tubes. It's very soft, musical, and creamy never harsh. Precautions were taken to power them in a way to minimize floor noise, and there's quite an amount of volume on tap to push that first V1 tube gain stage into form and character. It's very transparent and does kick up and tighten the SRV low E snap that he's so famous for. Kicking it on and off you can really tell the difference. The touch sensitivity is terrific where you get all of the juicy harmonic content working the guitar's Volume knob or by how hard your pick attack is.  :) It can be used for the usual lead/solo Boosting duty but was designed to be left "on". You really miss it when it's off.

Thanks SG,
I recently made a couple for a local player that is hyper critical on what he likes so I have a "breakout box" that I made that is easily transportable. I took it to his studio full of gear (like a mini Guitar Center) in a warehouse and set things up. I pre-tested a bunch of jfets' Idss & Vp and according to types, ie - J201, 2n5457, 2n5458, 2sk117, 2sk30a, and others ( I have a bunch of various types) all taped to sheets of paper. On the boards I soldered in sockets for quick and easy swapping. So he got one tailored for single coils and another for humbuckers. They are not really much if at all different from what I like to put in them anyway BUT he feels great about them being made just for him. He's been bragging to his friends about it too which is cool that he's stoked but also helps generate some more orders for me too.  :icon_biggrin:

Here's what I did to differentiate them (super hi-tech don't ya think? :) and also people like to see the actual top of the circuits here too.
