Title: Strange issue with 6g15 kit build
Post by: repoman on November 06, 2018, 12:49:38 pm
I have a 6G15 build from a mojotone kit, I built it a couple years ago and it has always been a basket case going through periods of working and not working.
I recently dug it out from storage and rebuilt the whole thing to get it working properly again, I had been using it the past week with a 6v6 and 2 12ax7s, I recently got a 6K6 and 12AT7 to install. When I did this the unit stopped working, which turns out one of the junky tube sockets had given up the ghost from all the fiddling. I installed a new-ish tube socket and the unit started working again with one issue, when the dwell pot is below 2 on the dial, the signal cuts out and the unit emits a loud buzz through the amp.

Anyone got any ideas of where to start with diagnosing this?

Start at the pot. Could be defective pot, bad ground connection, or bad connection to the tube socket.

While the unit is buzzing connect a ground jumper to the wiper of the dwell pot. Does the buzz go away?

Thanks for the help-

I connected a ground from the ground lug on the dwell pot to another ground point and it basically killed all the reverb signal passing through, it was like the unit was set very very low on all settings even with them maxed. I will try swapping the pot out...I think I really should completely rebuild everything in it though with a new turret board, resistors, caps and pots...it's become such a mess in there with how many times its been built/rebuilt and the eyelet board/layout is not very good to begin with.

I did 18 messy builds, now, I take the time, use lots of paper, soo if you want a keeper take the time, ALSO take enough pics that if you really really needed to put it back to messy you could  :icon_biggrin:
