Title: Forum format change
Post by: EL34 on February 15, 2019, 11:05:55 am
I added some code that makes the forum more responsive to mobile devices

The screens should automatically shrink down for small mobile device screens and small monitors

The forum text is the same size it has always been, but the text for everything else (stuff at the bottom of the page and even the pages that are linked) is huge! Been that way for a few days now. Same in IE-11 or Chrome.

I will have to look at it on my phone to see

A small screen needs bigger text or the links are too close together

Google checked this main forum page this morning and said it is now mobile device friendly

Before today, it was not and you get penalized by the search engines

I'm doing this from my home computer with a 27" monitor running 1920x1080. It's driving me crazy! I'll take the penalty any day over this. Here's a screen shot...

I changed the font size down to medium

In chrome:
Make sure you clear these setting so it will load a new .css sheet

You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave!   :icon_biggrin:

Several other little things missing too, like home, personal messages, search, profile, members, etc.

That stuff is all in the same menu
I put the old code back until I can find out what's wrong on the SMF forum
The MOD is a SMF mod to make the forum responsive to mobile devices

Thanks for the feedback

I checked it on a Samsung tablet and phone
It all displays ok

There are still some issues with post being wider than the screens which has to do with images posted

Something happened *after* the initial change, around 3 days ago. It got BIG on my desktop PC. And different bigs on different screens. I have to read threads at 80% to look reasonable, but thread-list pages are tiny unless rendered at 90%. FireFox on Win7. Window size 1400x1000 (monitor 1900x1080). Yes, it holds-together from full-screen to 400px wide, which is good.

I set the main font to medium, which works way better for mobile devices and people with large monitors
It looks pretty good on my twin 23" monitors set at 1920 x 1080

What is your monitor set to?

I adjust font sizes up and down all the time on web pages

This Chrome Extension works really well
Zoom for chrome
There a pop up tool bar where you can quickly adjust the font size up or down

I adjust way up when reading web pages

IE has the adjustment down in the lower right

No web page is perfect for all screens, but the tiny text sizes on mobile devices makes the pages un-readable
Search engines like Google and Bing penalize you for not being mobile friendly

I check both my web sites every week in the webmaster tools for Google and Bing
You get a report for all kinds of issues with pages on your web sites

From the main forum page; where it lists all the sections of the forum, there used to be a little glowing tube indicating which sections had new posts. I'm not seeing that now from my phone.

Looks to me like the tables collapse down so it can be displayed on very small devices like phone screens

You can simulate the same thing on a desktop by grabbing the window edges and making the window super narrow horizontally

Here's a screen shot on my desktop of the full windows and the collapsed window
Notice that 3 columns go away, not just the left one

It's one of the penalties for using a very tiny device
This is how google says the screens must react on small devices in order to be able to browse web sites

On the left below is a screen with all 4 columns
On the right is a cell phone screen

Yep, that's how it appears on my phone. Not a real big deal. I just wasn't sure if it was intended to appear that way.

Here's some screen shots from my Galaxy 4 phone

Note that you have two view choices in Chrome on a phone in the menu
You can request to view the desktop site view
Or the mobile view

Notice how the mobile view turns the menu into icons and deletes 3 columns so it can fit on the screen
The desktop view on my phone is shown in my screen shot and you get the full forum view like on a desktop computer
And how to select desktop view in chrome on my phone

I found the setting in .css
Chrome will not load the new .css file unless you clear out some files

shift-control-delete in windows
Then hit refresh on this page and you will see larger quoted text

Any way of getting back the full forum view on an iPhone?  I miss having the outside columns, particulary seeing when the last person replied on a thread and who it was.

I have no idea how Iphones work, but on chrome on android, you just tell chrome to use the desktop version, not the mobile version

That was already mentioned in reply #34 up above

Yep saw that reply for Android. Don’t know how to make an iPhone do it, or if it can.

Edit: Apparently you hold down the refresh button and select 'Request desktop site'.  I've just tried that but it comes back looking the same.

It would be a setting in your browser
