Hey,
Once again I am planning a new build. (This hobby is becoming a bit of an obsession 😆)
I wanted some ideas. You guys are all so much more knowledgeable than me and I really value your input. Thank you!
Up until this point Ive mostly made or modeled builds after fender style circuits. This time I am wanting to build a high gain style amplifier. I still want it to be low powered so Im going with a SE el84 or 6v6gt power section.
Transformer wise I have another vintage radio output transformer with a 25:1 ratio. So thats 5k ohm to 8 speaker ohm. Its VERY tiny though. How will that effect the sound?
My PT is a stancor 235-0-235@40ma with 5v@2a and 6.3v@2a with center tap.
After looking at some schematics myself I was thinking 2 12ax7s for the preamp and el84 or 6v6gt with diode rectification. Id like a gain knob, TMB tone stack, and a master volume. (Maybe some switches for other tweaks too)
Few questions:
1) Most marshalls i looked at had 3 triodes linked for the preamp. Would 4 be overkill?
2) Is it even possible to make tubes square wave clip like a fuzz pedal? It would be cool to make the amp have an insane switch that made it go nuts and sound like a fuzz face.
3) how would the el84 compare to the 6v6gt in this application? I prefer warmer/smoother tone generally.

Check out some of the AX84 sites amps.
