Anyone ever Build a champ 5F1 using an el-84?

mine was closer to a 5F2, and PSE EL-84

was there, done that, didn't love it much… EL84 to my ears, atleast, sound much 'in your face'... don't get me wrong, she's raw and got plenty of grit into her, but I simply didn't like that sound…

Btw. as I can recall weber had some kits called smokin joe few years ago...

I built one a few years ago. Not a kit, but I first followed the Smokin Joe 1 schematic. I did not like it much, so I played with the circuit trying several variants. None were bad, but I just liked octals better for SE amps. 6V6, 6K6, 6L6 all sound better to me in SE circuits. Well, to be honest, I like them better in PP too. Oddly I love El84s in HiFi amps. I have some old Fisher EL-84 amps that are just great.
