Title: Mounting Toroidal Transformer for Tube Pedal Project?
Post by: ktduck on April 08, 2019, 02:55:04 pm
Question for those of you who have built the tube pedal project...how did you mount the little blue toroidal transformer?

I'm putting together a pedal similar to a Hotbox, but using the power supply from Doug's pedal.  Prototype runs/sounds great on the bench (some hum, to be expected with all those long runs and the breadboard)--now I'm trying to figure out the best way to box it up.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry if this has been posted before...I searched several times and found the same question, but no answer.

Thanks!
Kevin

Put a screw through the hole in the center.

If I were mounting to a PCB, that would definitely be a option (the threaded hole is only on the lug side of the tranny and doesn't go all the way through).  I've considered doing just that and building out the power supply on one PCB, then putting the whole PS on standoffs.

But, I'm wondering how to mount with flying leads as shown below.  Has anyone drilled through one of these?  I don't want to toast a $20 part  :w2:

I think I drilled all the way through the center
That was so long ago I don't remember

I'll bet you $20 that if you drill straight through the center with a drill bit the same size as that hole that it will be fine. Hey, if I'm wrong you got nothing to lose. But I'm thinking a case of Icehouse!

So, wait...if it's fine I owe you $20 and if it's not I'm out $20 in parts?   :l2:

Makes sense since it's a toroid and hopefully all the leads run outside.  I'll throw it on the drill press tomorrow and let y'all know if I release the magic smoke.

And if you're ever venture up I-65, look me up and I'll buy you a beer, Sluckey!

Hey, I like that thinking. But the bet is that I'll send you $20 if it doesn't work.

BTW, I live 4 miles off I-65. So, straight shot. Slow down thru B'ham.

I promised, I stuck it on the hole-maker today.  A 1/8" bit was snug to the existing threads, so I lined it up and drilled away.  Hooked it up to the prototyping board and -- no magic smoke or flickering lights.  AC voltage as expected under load (note this is a 12v version vs. the 9v version used in the original project).  As an added bonus, a #6-32 machine screw will self-thread through the new hole.

Sluckey, I'm also about 4 miles off I-65.  If you're ever up this way, lmk and I'll buy you that beverage  :occasion14:

Nice set-up there ktduck. I especially like the heavy duty parts & VOM holder.  :icon_biggrin:

Thanks, jojokeo!  Love that panavise for holding meters, boards, etc.  The base is obviously good for collecting junk, too
