Title: More bear stuff
Post by: EL34 on July 03, 2019, 06:49:14 am

Another bear incident at my house.
The bear returned about 7 am.
I heard the dogs barking and I went outside to see what was going on.

The bear was running and one dog was running after it and gaining on it fast.
The dog caught the bear and bit it on the butt.
The bear ran another 100 ft, stopped and looked back.
I yelled the the bear to make it leave.
It looked at me and did not seem too concerned and then walked off.
It's not a very big bear.
Maybe a yearling.
But it is bigger than the dog that bit it on the ass :)

I was in Alberta Canada last week  (Banff to Jasper area).  One of the places I was at, a park guy said there were 300 black bears and 100 grizzlies in that area of the park.  (this was the Canadian Rockies)

Prior to the trip, I read that there have been years where there have been 12-20 reported bear maulings in this "tourist" area.
At one point in 2014, it was illegal to hike in groups of less then 4 and without bear spray in one of the areas.

When we were there last week,  there were a handful areas closed because of bear problems and elk attacks (calving this time of year). So, it's a real concern.  The park guy thought the black bears were more problematic then the grizzlies.  Perhaps the shear number was what he was referring to?

Doug, I would have been terrified that the bear would turn on my dog. I'm glad that didn't happen to you.

EDIT: Your dog looks pretty fast, but that's offset by the known fact that it chases bears!

DOG IS DOG!

My wife, from the Philippines has a saying: "Dog is Dog". When she first got here we went straight from the Portland International Airport, at night, 35 miles outside of Portland and lived in a cabin, off grid. She later told me she was bewildered cause she'd always heard they had these nice big cites in America, but since she didn't get into town until after the first month here, all she saw was the PNW foot hills of the Cascades.

I was at work and a black bear came around getting into the trash. As I recall, first she tried yelling at it from the window. When that didn't work, she let out my Chihuahua, which took off after the bear and chased it away. From my experiences where we now live, I've concluded black bears don't stick around when a dog starts barking due to the fact, it won't be long and another dog or 4 will show up to join the chase.

The above rule is not hard fast as I've mentioned before walking extremely close to a bear that just wasn't going to leave- at first anyway.

"oh Son, we're bear hunt'n", they seen the confusion, laughed n said "we let the dogs out about 1/2hr ago, should hear 'em in a few minutes when it's tree'd, then one of us goes n shoots it"  :think1:

Seems the Bears are active when the campgrounds fill up.  I understand, you are just strolling around and you get, well, hungry as a Bear.  You see these nice folks with their dogs, so you stop to ask "what's for dinner" except you get on the butt.

Actually, due to game laws, firearms are a troublesome alternative.  Except as follows, it's illegal to shoot bears; or even to shoot in their vicinity (warning shots) which is illegal harassment of wildlife, unless: i) you have a valid hunting license/permit during bear hunting season; or ii) you are under actual attack.  In the latter case being scared is not enough.  You need to be able to prove an actual attack.  Scars would be good evidence.  Otherwise you may be found to have committed a serious offense which can result in a criminal conviction; fine; imprisonment; permanent confiscation of your firearm and possibly automobile; loss of hunting privileges, etc.

which, from my rudimentary understanding of law, if I feel threatened with severe bodily harm, I CAN fire.  It's all mute anyway, Doug lives in a world like mine, if the friggen bear won't leave, pretty sure 90% of my neighbors, self included, would fire off a warning, and nobody in a 3mile radius would take notice, talk about it at the bear, bait, n gas, yup  :icon_biggrin:

if I feel threatened with severe bodily harm, I CAN fire.

I gave worst case legal scenarios above, of which it's good to be aware.  YMMV.

Note that State laws vary a lot.  In my state of NY, if you feel threatened, you have a duty to flee if you can do so safely; you must even flee your own home.  Some states have the Castle Doctrine: you can legally use deadly force against an intruder in your home; i.e., no requirement to flee your home.  Some states have the Stand Your Ground Doctrine: no need to flee anywhere.  None of this applies to wildlife.

MI has stand your ground, you are correct though about critters, If threatened it's less legal hoops to shoot humans than animals, It's still gonna bankrupt you either way  :think1:

When my daughter was playing basketball in Alaska, her coach would have them run trails and climb hills (mountains according to my daughter...) in the woods to break up the monotony. Coach carried a S&W .500 magnum on her hip.  She used it once to scare off a momma grizz and some cubs.  I've seen a few "Alaska Adventure"-type shows on cable where they fired off warning shots so maybe not as stringent in the great white north?

JJ,

Wildlife laws are crazy strict.  In my state possession of an eagle or hawk feather will send you to jail unless you are a licensed falconer or of American Indian heritage (and can prove your need for it).  So that cool Harry Potter quill pen you made for your daughter out of that big feather she found might have some serious bad magic attached to it...  Can't even pick them up.  Which is a shame as eagle and hawk rescue centers and falconers can use these feathers to repair damaged and broken feathers - yet another use for super glue.

Yes, I would hope the bear is some sort of "pet". Else the dog and the person with the camera should not be this close. I think the bear is "playing like a dog" (I'm sure you recognize the pouncing), but this dog doesn't feel like playing.

I'll join those raving about the Canadian Rockies and also Glacier NP in the US. My wife and I went there two years ago in June. Spent time hiking in Jasper and Yoho in Canada and then came down to Glacier and stayed in Many Glacier Lodge in GNP for an additional week of hiking. It was amazing! And staying at Many Glacier Lodge was a treat after years of camping. Rooms are spartan but the central lounge and deck are the places to hang. People were being kind of stupid with the Grizzlies, but often when they thought they saw a Griz, it was really a Black Bear that had brown fur - pretty common I guess.

We used to go walleye fishing every year at Lac Seul in western Ontario. Usually, one night during the week we would drive to the Ear Falls dump, because you were guaranteed to find bears there. I was amazed at the people that would get out of their cars to take pictures of the bears, sometimes from 8-10 feet away. The lodge owner said he occasionally had to deal with a bear if they persisted in visiting the camp. He said the bears could pop the siding off the cabins with their claws and get inside looking for food. He would never show us where he dumped the fish gut buckets...

Bears were here way before people were :)
This is their stomping ground

There's nothing on my property that would attract them
They just cruise through on a big loop looking for food

There's a million acres of national forest out my back door

I get emails about bear activity in my area all the time
If people have bird feeders, the bears will tear them down, so that's probably what they are looking for

Yah, those moose are way bigger than you think.   Never forget a hike on Isle Royale years ago -- minding our own business making our way down the trail when we came upon a large -- and I mean huge -- moose standing in the middle of the trail.   When he started grunting and moving towards us a recognizable smell was emitted from our small group, and we high tailed it out of there.

And I've met up with them since on hikes.  They don't scare easy, and they are big.

God help you if you hit one with your car on the road.

Out here in West Colorado when a bear comes into town to some neighborhoods, they usually get full on food from trash cans and then siesta in a tree at which point the game and fish is alerted and they come and shoot it with tranquilizer darts and take it back to the wild or euthanize it, their choice, I guess  based on many factors. Happens every year, and this is a small city with a rural feel.
In Idaho a couple decades ago a friend and I were up near Alturas Lake and were heading out for a day of gold panning, going up a forest road we passed a tent and as we were passing the side of the tent ripped open. It was a bear that had gotten into the tent to get to the cooler of food and beer.  He had a six pack in his paw and was about to enjoy gettin smashed.
Out here when in the forest or BLM campgrounds and bears show up they come and shoot them with bean bags to drive them off.
One thing I noticed a long time ago is some bears stink to high heaven.

Ah, Lord Buckley.

God's Own Drunk

I’d like to do a little creative wig bubble for you called “God’s Own Drunk”

Said, just like I say before, I'm a non-drinkin' man. Never drank for some reason or other - didn't like it. But like I said, too, I promised to take care of my brother-in law's still while he went in to vote.

Went up there and it was just where the map said it was. And I'm a gonna tell ya somethin', there was no li'l old five or ten cent still. It was laid there just like a golden mountain opal. With a kind of a honey dew cry a comin' from it.

I aren't a drinkin' man like I explained to you but that big old yellow moon was a hangin' out there, and God's lanterns was a hangin' in the sky and that curiosity got the best of me. And I took a slash. And I got a crazy revolutionary feelin' in my body. That yellow whiskey went down my throat like honeydew vine water. Huuuuh!!! It tasted mighty good! I felt a revolution goin' through my body like there was a great neon sign's a goin' up and sayin' "There's a great life a comin'!"

I could feel it talkin' to me and I took another slash and I got another jolt and I took another slash and I started to sing. I started to sing and that big ol' yellow moon a hangin' out there and God's sweet lanterns are hangin' in the sky. And I’s a singin'. Never could sing a note before in my life but I was singin' as fine and as pretty as you'd ever wanna hear.

And I took another slash. And then I took a big, full - that big ol' yellow moon a hangin' out there, God's lanterns hangin' in the sky, and suddenly I got a tremendous revolution of emotion in my body, like I was fallin' in love with everything in God's sweet world that moved. Lived, didn't live, animate, inanimate, black, blue, green, pink, mountains, fountains. I was in love with life. 'Cause I was DRUNK!

I wasn't fallin' down slippin 'n' slidin' drunk, I was God's own drunk - a fearless man.

And that's when I first saw the bear. Big ol' Kodiak lookin' fellah about 16 foot tall. I walked right on up to that bear 'cause I was God's own drunk and I loved everything in this world, walked right up tight to 'im about four and a half feet and I looked right up in his eyes and I wanna tell you somethin' brothers and sisters, my eyes was redder 'n his was - hung 'im up.

And he's a sniffin', he's a sniffin', he's trying to smell some fear - he can't do it cause I'm God's own drunk, and I'm a fearless man. He expects me to do two things - flip or fly - I don't do either, hangs 'im up.

I told him, I said,

"Mr. Bear, I'm God's own drunk and I love every hair on your twenty seven acre body. I'm a fearless man."

I said, "I want you to go - I know you got bear friends over the hill there, Harry Bear and Tim Bear and Jelly Bear and Tony Bear and Teddy Bear, Phil Bear, Hazel Bear, John Bear, Pete Bear and Rare Bear. Go over and tell all of 'em that I'm God's own drunk tonight, and I love everything in God's green creation, and I love them like brothers. But if they give me any trouble. I'm gonna run every GOD DAMN one of 'em off the hill!"

I moved up, don't you know he moved back two feet. I reached up and took the bear by the hand. I said ,

"Mr. Bear, we're both beasts when it comes right down to it."

He's a lookin' down at me. I said,

"I want you to come with me. You're gonna be my buddy, buddy bear."

Took him right by his big ol' shaggy island size hand and led him on over, sat him down by the still.

Well, he's sniffin', he's sniffin, he's knows there's honey dew around there, some kind of honey bear honey dew of some kind, he's a sniffin'. I know what he's a sniffin' at. I took a slash or two myself to taste her out and I filled him a bottle. Did ya ever see them bears, the silhouette a them bears at the circus suckin' up that sarsaparilla Aaaaah it was a fine lookin' sight.

And he downed another bottle and he downed another bottle and I put two more on 'im and pretty soon he started sniffin' and snortin', tapped his foot. He got up and started to do the Bear Dance - two sniffs, three snorts, a half a turn and one grunt. And I'm tryin' to do it, but I couldn't do it 'cause it was just like a jitterbug dance - it was so simple it evaded me.

But we was a dancin' and yellin', and God's sweet moon hangin' in the sky and God's sweet lanterns out there and there's jubilation and love on that hill and finally it piled up and up and up and got so strong it overwhelmed my soul. And I laid back on that sweet green hill with that big ol' buddy bear paw right in mine and I went to sleep.

And I slept for four hours and dreamt me some tremulous dreams. And when I woke up, that ol' yellow moon was a hangin' in the sky, and God's sweet lanterns was out there, and my buddy the bear was a missin'. And you want to know somethin' else brothers and sisters? So was the still.

Please be advised: When the bear is shot, and knows it is the end of life. it will attach the dog To revenge. This is from, FoxFire book on: Hunting Bears.

If the bear swipes the dog, it will send it flying 15 feet. Not good for the dog. I've seen the dog contend with the bear in the dead of night- And I have a really good bear dog. It keeps the distance and harassers the bear. Until. . .  well, you know.

I was very impressed when the most recent bear came through our property. Very quiet in movement. Nice cape. A very smart bear. Driven from it's place by logging and fires. So far. . .  Seems to have moved on.

Buck, my bear dog, is really cool. Smart. I tell him all the time- "Don't fight the Bear". Something we all should consider. Don't fight the bear. Whatever form it takes.

If you've ever been to Alaska you know that moose roam freely pretty much everywhere..   well I was driving from Ft Richardson to Elmandorf AFB one morning and a very large male moose was crossing the road, and the cars had to stop - I was at the head of the line and in a 63 VW bug,  the moose stood right in front of my car and peed all over the place, then continued accross the road.  I had to lean forward to look up at his head he was so large..   completely in awe.

I took the family there on the 90's The Moose reminded me of the Imperial walkers from star wars!
we were on a paved path, walked around a blind corner and there was a Bull, 20 ft away, back to me.  when He looked back, I went back. backwards, wasn't gonna take my eyes off that giant !!!

Bears seem so random in my experience.  My family has had a camp in if far eastern Maine for 40 years and we've never seen a bear even though the area is supposed to be highly populated with 'em per the Me. IF&W guys.  And we take no precautions either.  This week my wife and I are staying in a VRBO cabin on the side of a mountain in the Mad River Valley in VT and the owners told us they have been having to keep everything locked down and the compost machine was raided just a few days ago and warned us to be careful.   Almost like the night we spent in Yosemite a couple decades ago where it was "keep nothing in your tent, not even toothpaste, and the same goes for your vehicle, use the strongboxes, or whatever happens to your stuff is on you." Try to get a good nights sleep after that warning.
And moose??  I'm in the automobile collision repair business.  Seen more than one car totaled by run in with a "swamp donkey" as they are sometimes referred to.  If you're lucky it mashes the front end and hood and stops there.  If you're not it folds the roof down on top of you too, or as happened once last summer, it's noggin comes through the windshield and drools in your lap as it expires.
Nature and Man will always be in conflict, as pointed out by Blue Oyster Cult, history shows again and again
How nature points up the folly of man.

...we've never seen a bear...

9 years ago the crazy lady who lives behind the IGA told us she was friends with the local bear.

Our Great Pyrenees was bred to deter wolves and bears. She's always challenging something in the woods. Sometimes an owl. Sometimes a butterfly. (Once a porcupine....)

More direct evidence was bear-poop on the woods road beside our lot. Big, not herbivore, not dog/fox/coyote.

We've seen a fox, long ago. Coyotes howl all around most nights most years but never seem near.

The real danger is black-flies, mosquitoes, and deer-flies. And this year, ticks. My arm is all scabs from feeding the insects.
