What do you guys use for polishing out really fine scratches in a finish?

Auto finish stuff?

wet sanding 800-1000 grit, work up to 2000 then buff which you can do by hand using a jewellers compound (available at most hardware stores) and a soft rag

When I took a luthiers course building guitars all by hand with minimal machines. The teacher used brasso. which works very well actually.
Sometimes I use the brasso after sanding and then finer buffing compound.
