Title: PP 6V6 rock amp
Post by: Colas LeGrippa on January 16, 2020, 02:11:24 pm
Hi buddies,

I d like to mod an old PP 6V6 build for heavy rock purpose.  I have seen a couple of dchematics here and there but  as I can figure out, they re more suitable for country music.

Thanks for suggestions

Id check out the Stout on here. Any modified plexi 6v6 circuit would work for hard rock.

my first tube build was a 5f1 output section (actually 2 in parallel no idea what I was on) in front of a 2204 preamp. would still sound killer too if I didn't blow it up using EL34 level plate voltages.

rebuild that preamp into a 2204 (or if your wild, a mesa boogie distortion channel)

Alvin,

I, for one, like the way the 6V6 distorts when pushed.  I think it is VERY musical.  I think a plexi, or 2204, or mesa driven would be awesome.  My first real amp was a 6V6 PP converted mono hifi amp.  My dad built a switchable filter section and it could sound like Sabbath or the Beach Boys and everything in between.  But I think the magic was in the 6V6's.  Something you could write "home" about, without "going" there..... :icon_biggrin:

Hola amigos !

Finally I changed my mind and I decided to mod my 2 X 6V6's pp amp like a Deluxe 5E3. It is not a clone though because I was missing several parts to do it and on the other hand I didn't want to spend hours maybe an whole day to work on that.  But the result is quite interesting. I get bite, nice overtones , tons of good tone and loudness  to make me deaf to 100 %. ( I wanna keep my 50%  deafness so I stay prudent with the volume hey hey).

I copied the entire portion of the Deluxe preamp.
Including the 12AY7. I lowered the supply caps to 20 uf. This amp had already a choke so I kept it, as well as 100uF reservoir and 100 uF screen supply. I kept the cathode follower and the Marshall type LTP. To match the 6V6's plate to plate impedance I double the load of the 50W 4.3k OPT that was feeding the 2 X  6L6 before I put them in the garbage. I may get into a Deluxe clone building soon. These amps are simple and very musical.
