Title: Valco 510-11 does it have bypass/grid leak caps?
Post by: Hebert on January 17, 2020, 11:11:23 am
Trying to learn about schematics and was looking at this schematic and I don't see grid bypass caps. am I wrong? and if not should I add them if I build this?

Never heard of a grid bypass cap? If you want to build this just follow the schematic as is.

grids typically get resistors, grid leak, grid stop, used to "reference" grid to ground and block unwanted RF.
plates typically get caps, coupling caps, used to block the DCv from previous stage, whilst allowing the ACv to slip between the gap in the cap  :icon_biggrin:

Guessing that you may be noting that the power tube has no cathode bypass cap. Anyways I built a slightly different Valco a while back. Same circuit, but volume pot only. I used a cool Gretsch chassis that Ken Watts used to have - but I understand his business is gone and some folks never got their orders. I built a cab with Carolina Blue tolex - its pretty cool and I play it a lot. Agree with Sluckey - build it to the schematic. After its done you could add a power tube cathode bypass cap and see if you like the change. I do not remember what I did - but I suspect I added the cap after some testing. Too lazy to open it up and look, and I'm pretty bad about documenting my builds.

thanks, I will build it as it is.

Uh, no I don't know what you meant. Can you explain please?
