Title: Cap replacement
Post by: tubesornothing on February 10, 2020, 03:15:19 pm
Howdy gang... it has been a while!

I am repairing an old juke box amp for my brother.  The elec caps are old so I am going to replace them.  By matter of course should I replace all caps?  coupling caps, etc.

thanks!

got schematic, pretty comfortable inside tube amp?

me, I always like to just plug 'r in and go from there  :icon_biggrin:

if nothing flames out, I get what data I can then build a game-plan from that

to your question, depends;
vintage, keeping it original, then No
hacked a million times, rebuild it new n someones kids can fix it when they are your age  :icon_biggrin:

Probably, especially the old tubular wax coated paper caps. Some caps can stay. The domino caps are usually OK. Show us some pics. I'll show you the ones I would replace. Are you restoring the jukebox or just gonna repurpose the amp?

Hey Sluckey - long time.

Here are some pics of the amp and the tormat unit (for song selection).  We are rebuilding the jukebox, so not re-purposing it.  Has some noise issues - maybe some Dc on the pots.  A few scrathy post  No motorboating or anything like that.    For some reason, in the Jukebox circles, its a common thing to recap the whole unit.  But around here - with guitar amps -  it usually only when necessary.

I would approach this from an evaluation and troubleshooting standpoint, rather than just wholesale replacement.
