Title: New here just sayin' hi before I pick your brains :)
Post by: stanwax on June 30, 2020, 07:59:51 am
Hello all.
My name is Rob and I'm UK based, from Liverpool originally but live out in the beautiful hills of North Wales overlooking Caernarfon bay, with my partner of 25 years Sue and our stray cat Millie.
I was born with a soldering iron in my hand and I've always tinkered with electrical/electronic and mechanical things. I currently work in the field of entertainment lasers, and to this end I do laser displays for a number of artists and a few tribute bands (a Who, two Pink Floyd, and a Led Zeppelin tributes) and my day to day is repairing servicing & upgrading laser projection equipment. I also design and manufacture laser related electronic products, and have a small desktop SMT placement machine for this.
I have recently (finally) gotten into the repair and restroration of old(er) synths and have quite a collection of synths and drum synths that are mostly, but not exclusivley, analoge and much of what I have is Russian, much of it from Soviet era Russia. I try and buy broken stuff fairly cheap and the challenge and satisfaction is (especially with the Russian stuff), working out how they function and sorting out the problems and restoring to former glory.
Though I do make noise with them I'm not musically inclined (though I wish I was and try to be) and one of my favorite quotes when asked if I play is... 'When I play air guitar, it's out of tune!'
What has brought me here is that I dont know much of the thermionic world, though I have dabbled a little in my youth, and to give myself a challenge as well as to learn some more, I recently bought a Jennings Univox. I have lots of things I dont know and lots to ask but I will make a thread about that, as its not the place here.
The top and bottom is, that I am not sure how much of a useful contribution I can make here, If I can I will, but im selfishly here to pick the brains of the thermionic hive.
Thanks for having me
Rob
