Canada is charging a $6.95 Duty tax on 1st class packages and $9.95 on all other packages like Priority and Express
You can read more about this here.
https://stamps.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6065/~/introducing-canada-ddp-%28delivered-duty-paid%29 (https://stamps.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6065/~/introducing-canada-ddp-%28delivered-duty-paid%29)
Looks like it does not matter if the package contents are only $1, they still charge $6.95
And it also looks like that they will charge you even more if I do not prepay the duty.
If you read the page in my link up above, it looks like it will be $9.95 that your Canadian postal worker will try and collect from you when they deliver your package.
This will not work for me because as it says in the page link, people will probably reject the package if they see that they owe $9.95
So it's way better if I pay the charges in advance.
Another thing that happens is the packages do not go directly to Canada.
They go to New Jersey first and then they figure out where it goes in Canada
The new address labels are confusing
You can see a screen shot of one below
