Title: Organ Speakers
Post by: imgumby001 on October 29, 2020, 03:08:51 pm
Anyone ever repurpose organ speakers as guitar speakers with good results?

Yes. I can get a much bigger 6x9 speaker in the small radio cabs that I use for guitar amp
Below are a couple that are  completed and a couple in work
I think they sound good. I also am sure that I could kill the speakers with the power these amps can crank

Hey, you got quite a few of these old radio projects. I like stuff like this too. Have you seen my '41 RCA project? I wanted to use a 6x9 but Weber was not making that size at the time, so I opted for a 6".

Those are both awesome fellas!! I’ve got an old woolarock/Phillips that I’d like to do that with. What’s funny is I watched terry from d-lab repurpose an old radio and a 6x9 speaker can today for like the fifth time. I do t think I could do as good a job as you guys, but I’d like to try.

Glad to meet you all. Sluckey could almost get a 10" inside that cabinet.

I love repurposing these old radio cabinets into guitar amps.
My challenge is I buy the radio for the amp, but then can't bring myself to destroy the radio.
So I end up restoring the radio and now have more radios sitting around.
I have a side by side of the restored Westinghouse radio and the guitar amp in same cab and chassis with a huge 6x9 (it was not salvageable), When I posted this in the radio forum of coarse they prefer the radio. What do you like? BTW - notice the preamp coinbase. I love them....

My inspiration comes from "Squareamps". Check him out on Instragram
All mine are all point to point handwired and seem to take forever to complete (must be perfect).
I try to use vintage tubes, speakers, chassis and transformers if possible. Always use vintage cabinet.
I have also angled speakers to get a larger one inside (see pic below). Again, note the coinbase 6v6.

The car radio project will be really cool as it will be a two channel (one triode, one pentode)
driving a 6v6 push pull. It will have a switched output jack to disconnect internal speaker and let you plug in a cabinet. Wish I had a 4x12.

I had a couple of 12" from a Hammond L100. They were "close enough for Jazz" but lacked character.

I also have a pair of 12”ers out of an L-122 that sound interesting. But, I just scavenged a 12” out of a 70’s conn that actually seems like the real deal. It needs an appropriate open back can, which I’ll have to build. Should be interesting.

If they are not dedicated woofers or tweeters they are basically full range speakers and the same as what you see in many older guitar amps. I've used and sold many many organ speakers.
