Title: Variac Question
Post by: Jatchley on December 07, 2020, 08:26:52 am
is it normal for my variac to put out 70VAC even when turned off? i was checking out an amp the other day and found even with my variac turned entirely off with the amp plugged into it the power cable was reading 70VAC. it seemed strange to me that it was still giving juice even when turned off. it's relatively new i bought it from circuit specialists a few months ago. its the light blue 5A variac.

70VAC with respect to what? Connect your meter to the black and white wires in your power cord. Still got 70VAC?

He was measuring the voltage incorrectly. His meter was connected to line and earth rather than line and neutral.
