 The speakers are not plugged into the OT at the time of firing the amp up.

 If you don't produce any signal, not really a problem.
If you send a signal, you are in for some trouble. From experience: I played my guitar at about 50% volume, heard no signal, and kept playing (stupid me!). Well I saw smoke come out of the output transformer. Got lucky, didn't kill the tranny but, could have!
