Title: Anyone have recommendations for an Oscilloscope?
Post by: paintballnsk on February 03, 2021, 02:34:13 am
Hello,

I'd like to get a scope so I can view how my gain stages are clipping, and probably help debug some other basic small electronics like pedals and stuff like that. Does anyone have any recommendations? Some of these things have way more features than I'd ever need.

Is 100mhz enough for hobbyist use? 2 vs 4 probes?

Thanks

I will only buy Tektronix scope, two probes are enough.
Tektronix are tough and reliable.

I use many scope on work, it is the best one IMO

I bought a second hand Tektronix 2215 , 60 mghz scope. Easy to find for "cheap"

Con; This scope are very deep, it need 16 inches

100MHz is way more than you can need.

450KHz is plenty but you can't buy a real 'scope that slow today, except as a computer sound-port app.

Robustness is important. (Or low-low price.)

As a hobbyist myself with the same reasons you list, i bought a Siglent SDS1202XE a year ago and it does what I need. Relatively inexpensive, so far reliable for home workshop use, easy enough to learn to use, and takes up little space on my small bench.
That, a dummy load, waveform generator app on my i-pad, and a looper pedal let me work hands free and quietly.

My first job out of high school was at a home electronics shop (TV/VCR vhs vs. beta- discuss!/Audio) that had a service dept as well back in the early 80's.  I was in sales up front, but my free time was spent watching the techs. The place is long gone but I wish I knew where all that gear went.

I also bought a Siglent SDS1202XE last year even though I have a Tektronix 465B. I was mostly bored and just wanted something new to play with. Lotta fun! Nice scope.

I contacted siglent but they didn't respond yet.

Does the 1202XE do Bode plots? The 1104XE is on sale right now, and someone told me you can "get it with an option to do Bode plots", but I dont understand how they do options. They just unlock firmware with a key for a price? Or is it actually a different unit?

Search for the 1202 on google. You can find the instruction manual and some very in depth reviews.
