Title: Guitar pick up's suggestion please
Post by: Colas LeGrippa on February 06, 2021, 07:14:44 pm
Hi guys,

I'd like to replace the two bare knuckles pick up's on my jazzmaster by something more powerful. On my cigarbox guitar I have put two seymour duncan's hot rails that I like a lot.

But I d like something different, like a dimarzio super distortion or something else. They oughta  be at least as powerful as the hotrails and I don t want to buy anything without your advice. I m looking for tons of crunch and sustain while keeping the tone of the guitar itself. For example, I don t want the tone of EMG active pick ups on a plywood guitar, you know what I mean.

Thanxxx

Lindey Fralin or Jason Lollar make some really great Jazzmaster pickups, and can make them higher output, but the design of a Jazzmaster pickup isn't really well suited to high output winding.  The wide flat windings makes them particularly vulnerable to RF interference, and higher output pickups are even worse.  Fralin does make a hum canceling Jazzmaster pickup, but they aren't really available in different output values.

I have to mention that my jazzmaster has been modified decades ago and that the pick ups on it are of the same size  of a regular humbucker.
Thanx

I have a set of Porter's in my solidbody.  The overdrive model.  They are exactly as advertised, which sounds like what you are after.  They're actually too hot for me I have come to realize.  Much more "modern" than what I really want. In a high gain situation they sound great though and will sustain for days in my guitar.

I'm thinking of winding some more traditional HB's to replace them.

Might be interesting. I ll check the sound clips, the price, the coil resistance and so on and I ll get back to you.
Thnx

Honestly, I'd modify it back to real Jazzmaster pickups.  They are very different from other pickups, sound fantastic, and are a huge part of the appeal of a Jazzmaster.

You may be right. I would own a totally different guitar.....but this is also question of budget.
New pickups, electronic, handcraft and so on.
I actually took off its pickups that I will put up for sale on e bay. These are  " bare knuckles " p/u frpm UK, hand wired,  including covers.
I am  swapping those pickups by ones I have already  on hand, to keep  things goin' , whitout spending money.  I might eventually order jazzmaster pick ups from the link you already sent me.  Also  I own an oldoldoldold ....Gibsin SG all stripped out that I gotta to attack...
Thanx amigo, I ll seriously think about all  that.
