Title: Been an observer for a while BUT considering a new amp build

Hello everybody.

I’ve been lurking for months, and... after looking at all the posts and different outlooks at amplifier building and perusing sluckey’s massive schematic library, I’ve decided to try and design a hybrid stereo amp based on the Gibson GA-79rvt and the Magnotone stereo amp. I really want to take advantage of magnotone’s design and have tremolo and reverb in both channels.

I guess my questions are...

Has anybody on this board already attempted this? and, if so, what luck did you have? Also, do you think I can get away with designing something so close to the Magnatone circuit? I’m sure Gibson could care less, but, Magnatone is still active and has renewed patents.

In the planning stage I’ve already purchased the NOS tubes for the Gibson build (OUCH). So I’ve a pretty large investment going on with 6EU7’s and 7199’s and more.

BTW, I’ve already built the stereo circuit for my Sheraton Pro. I think having a stereo guitar and amp is just the coolest thing since I installed the FM converter onto the AM radio in my ‘63 Dodge Dart GT.

That's a very ambitious project! Which Magnatone amp? Why hybrid? Start by stitching the two schematics together.

A few years ago someone on this forum built a Magnatone 280 (not 100% sure of the model). I can't remember who. Another member, terminalgs, owns this very informative website...

Thanks for the answer Sluckey.  I’d kinda planned on stitching the 79 and 280 together as you’d mentioned. I’m close to retirement and this project will likely take a while to complete, but, it’s something to keep me busy for a while. I really like the approach of Gibson with they’re triangular shape and plan on incorporating that concept in my build.
