Title: DHGate Guitar
Post by: dpm309 on February 25, 2021, 11:14:11 am
Came across this: https://www.dhgate.com/product/promotion-electric-guitar-gd-guitars-p90/545474255.html?d1_page_num=1&dspm=pcen.sp.list.1.wIHaLPQlnk2TxsDGL0Rd&resource_id=545474255&scm_id=search.LIST...NDBADF|0|0.&skuid=766790907529580544#s1-0-1;searl|3922457608:1I have been looking for a LP style guitar with P90s and this caught my eye. Did some research on this company and they seem legit. Can get the guitar, hard shell case and shipping for $322. The only negative comments were that the guitar had to be set up properly which I can do.

What are your thoughts?

You never know what you're going to get.  That is the problem.   Could be pretty good, or bad.   I've seen both (though am not familiar with DHGate per se)

There are some you tubers out there who review these now and again (search DHGATE guitar), worth checking out.  They certainly are cheap!

I am not a fan.  Usually by the time you level, polish and crown and replace the electronics and get it sounding good, and you can, you still have a $200 guitar.

In this category, I am a fan of the Heritage H-150, an older H-157, The 150 is a Les Paul Standard, the 157 and they only made a few, is the custom.  Still expensive, but the ESP LTD 1000 Comes with Duncan JB's and a 59 in the neck.  This guitar is $1000 new.  I buy them often for under $400 and they are amazing in their quality.

This from a Gibson, Fender dude too.  I have 2 incredible Les Pauls I will probably never take away from home again.

Yeah, I am a Fender, Gibson, and Rick fan but have always wanted a LP Goldtop w/ P90s but cannot afford one. Have been looking at this as project to keep me busy. Also looking at DIY kit: https://www.solomusicgear.com/product/solo-lp-style-guitar-kit-carved-body-set-neck/
This would entail a lot more work though.

Now taking it on with the idea it is going to be "your gold top" and you want a finish platform to build on, this is a great idea.  A Gold Top with P-90's, I am a fan.  I have known a number of people to get these.  Other curious players. A solid color is better.

Most will have the Gibson Logo and open book headstock.  The last one I had my hands on was the "Jimmy Page" Chibson Les Paul.  Not bad, all the push pull pots and wiring was correct.  A little harsh sounding, but ok.  The bridge wasn't positioned as good as it could be, but I have seen Gibsons worse.

The only give away on the guitar now is the Maple top center line is not in the center.  I have 2 Gibson guitars that I have managed to get my hands on.  2 really good ones, a 335 and a Les Paul.  Just gotta have one!

Already have a 1966 Gibson ES335 and 2 single coil Fenders and want a guitar with P90s. Not gigging much these days so it will be for occasional jamming and playing/recording at home. I wish Epiphone made a gold top model with P90s.

Epiphone Les Paul Special TV Yellow.  They’re an amazing value. They go fast though.

I've got a MIC single pickup Les Paul Custom that is pretty good, but the tuners and the pots needed to be upgraded. Like almost any guitar, you will have to set it up to your liking. If I were to get a Gibson outfitted the same as my Chibson it would cost 20x as much. I just don't want to have that much money invested in something that costs as much as a car and is so easily stolen.

I've also had an Epiphone LP and it needed the exact same upgrades.

Thanks for the suggestion BlueB. I got put on the wait list at Sweetwater in case I decide to go with the Epi LP Special. Specs look good and the only downside is it doesn't have an adjustable bridge which I could live with or change out in the future.Dan

I ended up purchasing a new Vintage (brand) P90 Goldtop through Reverb.com for only $440. Guitar was playable right out of the box as the music store it came from did a good job setting it up. Craftsmanship was very good and there are no sharp fret edges, neck is nice and straight, and the finish is perfect. Been playing it for the last couple of hours and it I think it sounds every bit as good as a Gibson LP. Will be keeping this one.
