Title: Home Grown Cabinets
Post by: p2pAmps on May 25, 2021, 11:52:54 am
Hey There Builders,

I am curious how many of ya'll build your own cabinets?  I fully admit that I order almost everything from pro cab guys.  Lately I have been dabbling doing a few for myself.  Kinda fun when you know you get to enjoy one for yourself.  I would love to see some pics in this thread.  Here are a few I've done plus another I am working on now in flamed maple.

Very nice! I'm surprised you haven't been doing this all the while.

Well the truth is for customers it really doesn't pay me to build myself.  Customers pay for the cabinet anyway and the time it takes to build is not a good use of my time.

Ahh yes. Customers. I keep forgetting that this is not just a hobby for some. Still beautiful work.

Well, it's still a hobby for me but it helps me buy more tools for the shop!

Cabs look great Mike!  :occasion14:

Do you notice any difference in sound from the maple instead of pine or birch plywood?

I have not had them side by side but I can tell you they both sound pretty great.

Very nice work!  My garage is over-packed right now, but I hope to make some space at some point.  Part of that issue is because I have a CNC machine that isn't finished yet and it has a fairly decent footprint.  With that being said...  I hope to be using the CNC to do a fair bit of the work, but I will most likely be doing the joinery myself (finger joints or maybe a lock joint).  I suspect I'm still a ways off from moving on things...

Have you tried the Electro Voice EVM12L (https://www.amazon.com/Electro-Voice-EVM12L-Classic-Guitar-Loudspeaker/dp/B000Z33HYI/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=electro+voice+force&qid=1627522498&sr=8-5)? All the Dumble guys like 'em for powerful/clean sounds. I have one in my TV cart (http://sluckeyamps.com/TVcart/TVcart.htm).

The speaker in this one is an EV Force and so far so good.  It was a NOS I picked up o Reverb.  I also like the Eminence EM12 which is suppose to be like an EVM12L.

Beautiful work. Are you using poly? Im just now trying to learn to make finger joints. Made two simple jigs but the joints came out a little too loose. Probably need to invest in some calipers to get things set up more accurately.

Thanks!  The finish is acrylic urethane seal with shellac first.  The joints in the cabinet are actually dovetails in which I use a Leigh jig and a Festool router.  For box (finger joints) I use an incra i-box jig and my table saw setup with a dado blade.  Super accurate and tight joints.  Chck out that incra i-box jig for box joints :)

Cheers
Mike
