Title: Replacement O-Rings for Tuners?
Post by: Fresh_Start on June 10, 2021, 06:49:17 pm
Re-stringing my 2001 Mexican Stratocaster, I checked the tension on the tuning pegs. Several seemed really loose.  Then I realized that the o-rings between the button and the body of the tuners are broken. One is just gone.

I checked StewMac and WD Musical Supply, but either they don’t carry these or I don’t know what they’re called. Anyone know where I can find replacements?

Thanks in advance,
Chip

I never saw o-rings on tuners before.  If you measure them -- ID, OD & Thiickness you might find suitable replacements or mixed sets/sizes. Try eBay, Amazon, McMaster Carr.

Can do and thanks!  I don’t know what else to call them.  They appear to made out of nylon. Tuners are simply labeled “Fender”.

I’d simply replace the tuners except this neck has other issues as well. Needs new frets, I’ve dug into the fingerboard in places, and I’m not sure it’s worth it compared to the cost of a replacement neck.

Nylon washers should also be available.

O-rings are flexible seals.

Those are plastic (maybe nylon) bushings.   Nylon washers would work as well.

LOL.  I just searched for tuner buttons on eBay, and this was the very first item that came up

My American Strat tuners use nylon washer, not O rings. Fender may use rubber on low budget tuners ?
IMO nylon is better than rubber, rubber don't slip easier ( and breake ) as nylon do.

Small nylon washer can be bought in a hobby shop ( trains, airplanes...) or Hobby Lobby (?) electronic stores , Home Depot

I had a similar issue after pulling out my mothballed RG270. The nylon bushings had become brittle and one cracked in half.
After a long search, I finally gave up and just biught a cheap set of tuners and stole the bushings off of them. Cost me about $12 on scAmazon.

Sorry!  I thought I’d turned on notifications for this thread. Thank you so much - those look like exactly what I need.

Late to the party.  Different manufacturers use slightly different sizes, and some of them can be very hard to find.  Allparts "has" some sizes, if they are in stock, which they probably won't be these days.  They are non-standard sizes, so anything you get from McMaster-Carr and the like won't work.  Given the tuners used on Mexi Strats, I honestly would usually have assumed you would have a hard time finding them.  If the ones on ebay worked, great, but I'm surprised.  They mostly use Pings, and I've always had a hard time finding parts for those.
