BLUF: I'd like to know your thoughts on a statement a long time local music store owner said to me.
Background: I took a princeton reverb I built (mojotone) into the store and let him play it. I was just trying to get my build cost out of the amp to further pursue my love for this hobby. He liked it and we made a deal.
Discussion: He said he used to sell (within the last couple of years) Fender Clones (PTP hanwired replicas) that a very well established custom amp builder makes, But he stated that people were returning the amps for trade ins on the modern fender reproductions claiming his amps did not have that fender chime. I think this is a very subjective statement though.
Question: Since I love building these clones myself, I'd like to ask you seasoned vets, do you you think there is truth to that and if so, are there any mods that accentuate that "Fender Chime"? Thanks.
P.S. The store owner is very nice gent and a Navy Veteran.

If you take a classic Blackface Fender Reverb amp with all the original bits and pieces (assuming the electrolytics etc are good) and you dime all the controls (but only give it about 2 on the reverb), and wind the guitar pickup volume right back until the signal is clean (and assuming to have a bright cap on you guitar vol pot), you should get quite a chimey sound

It may be a polite way of saying "no, I just don't want to get involved. . ."
Well built clones have the chime.

i find many guitarists 'hear' with their eyes so if it doesn't say fender across the front, it's missing the "fender chime"

Some of that chime is from
the excessively bright speakers puts in their current production reissues. It’s great for a squeaky clean 60’s thing but push it any harder and it’s not an enjoyable sound to my ear.
