Title: Red Box cabinet emulator VS. speaker

Not an apples to apples demo, I admit.    I used two different amplifiers and two different guitars.   One amp has 6BM8 tubes and a hollow body f-hole Tele with single coil type pickups was used.   The other amp had 6V6's and a 335 copy was used with humbuckers.

There are two versions of "Over the Rainbow"   Version A   Version B


There are two versions of "Georgia"    Version A    Version B


Can you tell which version of which song is used a Hughes & Kettner Red Box cabinet emulator  VS.  an amp with a speaker cabinet?   :icon_biggrin:


The same amount of very slight delay, very slight compression and EQ was used on both recordings.  So that aspect is apples to apples. NO effects pedals were used. Just straight guitar into amp on each.

I'll play....

I hear distinct differences.  Which is "better"  is hard to say depending on what the goal was. Here are my guesses

Song 1:  A speaker  B  emulator 
Song 2:  A emulator, B speaker
Song 3:  A speaker,  B emulator


I am calling the speaker the one that sounds slightly more distant, with slightly less volume and more "artifacts" that would lead me to believe it is a live acoustic recording.

The one I am calling emulator sounds closer, slightly louder and cleaner with less acoustic artifacts leading me to believe it is a direct electronic recording.

Having never heard the amp, cab, or red box emulator, I could have these backwards. 

Was the cab close miked or miked at a distance?

In either case, it is quite good. Kudos.

Jazz A
Rainbow B
Georgia A


The speaker was 12” in a Fender SuperSonic22 open back cabinet with a Shure 57 mic’d close on speaker.
