This originates from the game of baseball, as in, the batter is "stepping up to the plate" to challenge the pitcher.

Ah nice, good its also tube related!

I only see baseball in movies over here in the UK, always hear 1st base, 2nd base, so assumed it was home run>home base, not plate, now it makes sense
