Title: DIY Pickup Winder on a Budget!
Post by: rake on May 01, 2022, 03:31:15 pm
Hey y'all My little shop of guitar repairs has been quite busy.
Had a few guys with dead pickups so I decided to look into a winder.
(I worked in a shop years ago and we had a winder there)
Long story short, I can't justify the cost of the commercial winders
so I made one! Cheap too! LOL!

Here's what you need to make it go round and round.

Power Supply $7.49

Speed controller $14.99

DC motor $19.99

Digital punch counter $6.99

I ran into a slight snag with the counter. Seems it does not shut off and the battery just dies in a couple days and it's not easy to remove. So I used this inexpensive circuit to drop the 12v from the power supply to 1.5v to run the counter.

The hot leads of the reg are simply soldered to the battery terminals of the counter.
You'll need a DPDT switch for rotation a SPST switch for power and a fuse holder and fuse
for safety.

The pot comes with the speed controller.
I used 3/8 id bearings for the shaft.
I made aluminum pulleys at about a 3 to 1 ratio.
belt was a large o-ring.
there's no reason the pulleys and bearing holders can't be hardwood.

I sourced the bearings and other components from Digikey.

If you need any other pics or info just holler!
