Title: WD-40 contact cleaner Ok for pots, switches and jacks?
Post by: Platefire on May 19, 2022, 10:14:02 pm
Been using DeoxIt D5 but it's now about $20 bucks a can plus about that much for shipping. Can't get it locally. I bought the WD-40 contact cleaner today from Wally World but a little afraid to use it on my guitars and tube amps. Anybody have any experience with this??? I didn't know it existed before today. Deoxit 5 at Really Big River Prime - $15. free shipping. BTW - for pots I use the lubricant stuff, unless they are really bad, then I use the 5 first followed by the lubricant. I would not trust the WD-40 stuff, until after you try it.

You have a bunch of cheap guitars. Just try it and report your findings.

slucky I'll have you to know that I've become such a good guitar tech that my cheap guitars have become my #1's and my high end guitars have become #1++++++++a million :icon_biggrin:
The WD-40 Contact Cleaner was $8.00 with tax. If I can get the DeotIt D5 for $15---free shipping, that just another $7 and I could take the Wally World stuff back and get me a box of ice cream for the return. But I've never heard of "Really Big River Prime" ????? Is that a real place?
I read a lot of reviews on the WD stuff(after I bought it) and most of it was not good. The largest complaint is, "It works good the first time you use it but shortly there after the static and scratchiness come back before long worst than before" Platefire

Well bmccowan---I'm kinda slow :dontknow: like Clint Eastwood said, it's good for a man to know his limitations but PRR strung me along to help me "get it". I can come to the same conclusions that quicker people can do, it just takes me longer to get there :l2: . sluckey has to give me a whoppen ever now and then :help: . So---in conclusion, I will take the WD-40 back and get the Deoxit D5 because I don't want to take a chance with my hard earned equipment on an unknown. I'll let someone else do the testing on the WD-40. Platefire

All joking aside, it'd be interesting to compare the MSDs of the products. My uninformed guess is that the WD-40 product is closer to the CRC contact cleaner than it is to D5. And if Sluckey is right about the cheap guitars, I also have a bunch. And many that were once cheap are now "collectible." Silvertone, Harmony, Supro, Airline, Guyatone, Teisco, Kay, they are are all fun and take up the same amount of space as Fenders and Gibsons. :icon_biggrin:

I always found good herbal relief needed when I was handed YET another MSD to read.
unless you're really into Chemistry it's a pretty dry read  :icon_biggrin:

someone left a paperback by Him in the ship's library, I picked it up and put it in the Helo-gear locker so I wouldn't be bored waiting on the Helo, the book got confiscated, I got reprimanded.

I had forgotten and that is a very entertaining thread. My favorite cheap electric is a squire Tele Custom II with 2 P90s. It is extremely well made.

That's why I had to quit buying cheap electrics, ran out of room! Same thing on building amps!

Got my 5 oz  can of DeoxIt D5 today for $15.95 plus tax off flea bay. Guess I'll be good to go for a while. I noticed I had a old 11 oz can of Radio Shack "Lube Job" I've had for years and years. It says it Lubricates, Protects, Penetrates and cleans. Somehow I don't trust it! It will be my last resort option :icon_biggrin:

In the last weak a bass arrived here with tone pot frozen, the only thing I had in hand was WD40, well it did work! had to disassemble the pot to get the job done, some afterward cleaning and pot got back to business !

I've come across them mighty stiff pots but never completely frozen up. WD-40 has been said to do some amazing things over the years. I've even heard that some folks have sprayed it on their joints for Arthritis:>) I have worked on old amps that have been sitting up a long time that wouldn't amplify nothing but static and cleaned all the pots, switches and tube sockets with contact cleaner and after that, it started working. So that's usually the first thing I do to old equipment that has been setting up a long time. Platefire
