 The top picture's input jack looks funny to me. Is the sleeve carrying the signal? Or is it mislabeled?

I assume the idea is to have the battery circuit enabled when you plug a standard 1/4" plug into the stereo jack--the ring gets tied to the grounded sleeve.

 I think you are right Ken. The top A/B is mislabelled. The S is on the wrong side of the jack. They have basically labelled the tip T & S.

It should look like this
