Title: My BF PR can REALLY do metal
Post by: Dyerseve726 on August 06, 2022, 06:20:59 pm
I posted about this build previously, but it continues to absolutely blow my socks off and I wanted to share. My buddy is into metal and a very good guitar player. He was practicing with an Orange Dark Terror (only amp he owned) and it sounded seriously terrible to me. It seemed like a ludicrous idea, but I knew my last build had crazy low end control, so I figured I'd bring it over and let him give it a go. It sounded fantastic. Outrageously good. Four of us guys sat around watching the man play for like 2 hours and he was very sad when he had to turn the amp off and go home, lol. It's just hard to believe such sounds can come from an old Fender design, with speakers very much designed for the old Fender BF sound, in an open back cab. So bizarre.

It doesn't seem like much of a change, but my only alterations are Bandmaster OT, Tremolux PT, 6l6 tubes, and a mid knob. All parts are top end. I built 3 mostly standard PRs previously, and this one sounds nothing like them. Palm mutes are epically huge. It's thick and in your face 😂 Unfortunately, best I could do was a cell video. He's using an MXR Fullbore Metal.

Certainly sounds like it has metal in the can. How much of that is the MXR do you think?

It's a weirdly crunchy amp (by accident), I think he's at noon, and he's really pushing the front end with that pedal. A lot of the basic characteristics are the MXR, but it was jaw dropping in person and I really believe the amp and cab have a ton to do with it. The other guitar player has a larger, more expensive Orange, with different pedals, and when he plugged into this amp, his exact words were "this is the best rock tone I've ever heard". I think it's the low end in particular. It's unreal. Hits you in the chest, deep and tight. Clean, or with pedals. It has the magic, I dunno.
