Title: 5F6A speaker investigation
Post by: mresistor on January 20, 2023, 10:07:01 am
Have a friend that wants to play bass through a custom 5F6A bassman head with 8 and 16 ohm outputs and a tweed 4x10 cab.  We all know that these open back cabs aren't for serious on stage bass playing with a drummer, especially a loud drummer.  But for hobby bass playing at lower volumes, as well as playing guitar through it I am trying to determine what set of 4X10 speakers would be up to the task.

Ideas are welcomed.

One idea I had was to use two 10" 16 ohm bass speakers, and two 10" 16 ohm guitar speakers on separate inputs  two 2x10s to be used for different purposes.  Or could be switched.

Well - Leo designed the bassman for bass guitar. If not gigging live, why not stick with what worked. I'd look at Weber speakers - lots of options and high quality IMO.

Open back cabinets are pretty wimpy for bass.

A cabinet can still look like a tweed cabinet from the front & have a closed back. (I have built those)

But Mojo & some others offer a 3-piece back panel on some of their custom models so you can play with "porting" by adding or removing sections. Haven't built one of those yet, but it is on the list.

Well ended up going with 4 x 8 ohm Eminence B102 speakers..  I have also recommended making a panel to cover the open space in the back of the cab. Says it sounds good as is.
