Title: Peavey Rock Master preamp build
Post by: fossilshark on January 28, 2023, 06:59:24 pm
Hi all, this might be crazier then the jcm800 with parallel 6v6 output tubes I made in high school. My friend runs a peavey rock master preamp through a power amp and he really wants an all in one amplifier with the rock master built in and an EL34 power section. The only thing he wants to get rid of is the crunch channel (and crunch fx loop).

I am way out of my league on this one. I usually build all my amplifiers p2p on terminal strips but that is NOT going to fly with this one. I have no problems designing circuit boards.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice about things I could axe to cut down on complexity (like could this be done without the solid state components?), other builds I can look at for reference, or reasons why this is an absolute terrible idea. You guys always steer me straight so any advice is greatly appreciated.

You have my sympathies.

Coming from you, I am just going to offer to build a custom power amp to replace his peavey classic 50/50

You always know what I need to hear slucky thank you.

besides the different effects loop outputs for each channel, isn't the rockmaster preamp just the preamp section of the peavey ultra series (ultra, ultra plus, xxx)? my rockmaster/classic 120 and xxx sounded exactly the same
if the separate effects loops are manditory then maybe a custom effects loop switcher that connects to the amp footswitch would be a whole hell of a lot easier

Bingo.  Build that amp and find a way to house both in the same box. I'd leave the pre in it's original house too. If those are built anything like my TGRaxx, for longevity and reliability that would be key.  The power amp could probably be built into a 2U rack size config with a little preplanning. Then both could go into the appropriate sized rack case kind of thing, for one idea.

Yup its going to be rackmount in a 2u. He already has a roady rack for the preamp and power amp.

sorry PRR, is there a better way to post PDF schematics?

It's not you. Someone at Peavey went crazy sticking stuff in endlessly, and then breaking it up so every stage goes off and on board through tangled wiring-lines.

And I think I worked this out once before but no trace remains.

I'm glad im not the only one struggling with that schematic  I had to axe the idea because to build it into the same chassis as a power amp would be WAY out of my league.
